Does it matter what state you get certified in?

    Hey everyone,

I just found out that there are new educational requirements for California. I have 150 units of course work which I believe would make me eligible for some state. However starting January 2014 California is starting to require an additional 10 units of ethical requirements, 6 units of accounting courses, and 14 units of business courses on top of the 48 units I already having in business and accounting.

I have not been working in accounting for six years, so I was hoping me becoming certified as a CPA would update my credentials. My real question is will employers care what state I get certified in? If I pass the tests and am not certified will I be in demand?

I really haven’t decided whether I am going back to public accounting or whether to do private accounting. I figure if i go to private accounting I can put CPA on my resume and not specify the state I am certified in.

If I want to be a tax accountant will the public accounting firms care what state I am certified in? In public accounting you only really need local certification for signing off on audit papers and higher level consulting right?

What states are the easiest to get certified in?

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

After spending last hour researching it appears that you can take the exams in a different state than you end up getting your license in. I am now wondering if being a certified accountant in another state will affect my marketability in California in both a private and public accounting environment?

I'm not sure about California, but some jobs require you to be certified in that state while others don't care. Usually, private accounting is not as strict.

I live in Florida and taking the CPA in Colorado because I dont have the 150Hrs florida requires. I only have a bachelors in Accounting. As long as I pass the exam, I dont have to be license in Florida. According to CPA literature, the Manager of an Audit engagement will need to be licensed in the state they are performing the Audit. Since Im not going that route, I dont need to have the extra credits.

You also have to be aware that if you are licensed in a different state than you work in, you cannot just put “CPA” next to your name. Big no-no. It should say “CPA – Colorado” or “CPA – Kentucky”. Whatever state you are licensed in. If you ARE licensed in the state you work in, then you can just put CPA.

I personally think it's worth the time to be licensed in the state you plan on living in, regardless of the extra requirements. Just my two cents. I have friends who went both routes, and get very annoyed that the can't just have “CPA” by their name.

    Licensed Florida CPA:
    B: 71, 73, 79
    A: 83
    R: 78 (expired), 77
    F: 74, 74, 80

    It's finally freaking over.

I called the CA's State Board for the CPA exam since I live in here now, but am taking the exams through NH.

They said that, as long as you have met the education requirements for CA when taking the exams through NH, you can transfer your education requirements and get licensed in CA.

CA seems pretty lax in terms of transfers. They mentioned that it is up to the other state to transfer you, and we will take anyone who meets our education requirements…

Not sure if that's your question? BTW – NH is one of the easiest states to meet the education requirements.

    FAR - 76
    AUD - 75
    BEC - 75
    REG - 76

Now I need some experience!!! And some networking...

    Thanks for the feedback guys!

I recently quit my job as a butcher to study full time for the CPA exam. I did the math and I only need 6 units in accounting courses and I need to take a business law course to get he “ethics” requirement to become a CPA certified in accounting. I think I am going to take some classes that overlap with the CPA exam. For example I want to take an online corporate tax class from uc berkeley extension while I am studying for REG.

I am really hoping to get the 9 units and pass the CPA all in 6 months, because I am hoping that a CPA certification will over shadow the fact that I haven't worked in accounting for close to six years. Otherwise I plan to take some tax classes anyway at a state school just to get into “Meet The Firms”. So CPA licensed in California is now what I am shooting for!
