Does Illinois work experience require your supervisor to be a CPA?

I contacted the Illinois CPA Society a few months back and the response I received was that the work experience does NOT have to be supervised by a CPA. However, I have seen in other places on the internet that it does need to be supervised by a CPA.

I tried contacting the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation before I began this journey and was quite frustrated as they wouldn’t seem to answer my questions and just kept telling me to “read the licensure law”. I read the law and I don’t see anywhere that supervision by a CPA is required.

Can anyone confirm what the answer is? I work in corporate accounting and my boss used to hold his CPA but is not currently active.

Thanks for any feedback on this…

My understanding is that your supervisor does not have to be a CPA, from what I have read online, so I believe the response you got from IL Society of CPAs was correct. Hopefully they know what they are talking about 🙂

No, IL does not require that work experience be under a CPA anymore. Per ILCPAS website:

“The IDFPR licenses persons who have received an Illinois CPA certificate and who have had at least one year of full-time experience, or its equivalent, providing any type of service or advice involving the use of accounting, attest, management advisory, financial advisory, tax, or consulting skills. Experience may be gained through employment in government, industry, academia, or public practice, and is not required to be acquired under the supervision of a licensed CPA.

IDFPR also licenses “by endorsement” individuals who have a valid CPA certificate and/or license from another jurisdiction that’s substantially equivalent.

If you wait more than 4 years after receiving your Illinois CPA certificate to apply for a license, you will need to have completed 90 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) within the 3 years immediately preceding the date of application for licensure.”

I also spoke to a super nice lady from ILBOA about 2 years ago who confirmed that it does not have to be under a CPA.
