Response below. If you want to read it. Simply stated I cannot gain experience through industry in Nevada. Does anyone know of a good state to get licensed in that allows industry experience from Finance or possibly not 4 years of internal audit? I’m not going into public accounting and the company I work for does not have internal audit positions in Nevada. I also don’t want to have to spend 4 years in internal audit. I’m trying to stick with Finance.

    Nevada response below.

In response to your questions below regarding the experience requirement. The Nevada Board changed its experience requirement in late 2013. It was a difficult decision for the Board to remove the audit portion of the experience required. At this time based on the changes that were made there are only two methods of gaining experience in Nevada as follows:

    1. 2 years public accounting under the supervision of a CPA

    2. 4 years in internal audit or governmental accounting and auditing under the supervision of a CPA

Unfortunately there are no provisions for any experience being obtained through industry (even if it is under the supervision of a CPA). The Nevada Board is still unusual as most states allow for experience that comes from industry. The Board will be reviewing their statutory language during the next legislative session in 2017. However until then the law only allows for the above.

You might consider looking at some of the other states in order to at least obtain licensure from a state that allows industry for experience. The only problem with that is that you wouldn’t be able to utilize the CPA designation from another state in our state. However if you only need it for your employer it might be an avenue worth pursuing.

Let me know if I can provide further clarification regarding the above.

Unless you get the public or internal audit experience NV requires, you will not be able to transfer your license from another state to Nevada.

I passed the Exam as a Nevada candidate and then sent my scores off to Kentucky to be licensed. Kentucky requires 1 year of accounting experience and my then-boss was a KY CPA so it was really easy. One page application, one page experience form, form to the NV CPA board to transfer my scores, and transcripts and one month later I was a KY CPA.

I'd look into where your boss (or whoever is signing on your general accounting experience) is licensed and look at their requirements. CA and AZ would have required more paperwork but the experience requirements were the same.

I can use the designation on my resume and can list it on job applications. I will never be able to practice as a CPA in Nevada or transfer my license unless I get the public experience. I think I could put it on my signature line of emails, letters, etc as long as it's clear I'm not practicing as a CPA but rather acting in my industry job.

    FAR - 93 (YAY!!!!)
    REG - 93 (Double YAY!)
    BEC - 87 (Whew!)
    AUD - 96 (DONE!!!!!)
