@nnenna – First, dont worry about the credit expiration dates. If they havent already, your CREDIT tests will turn to PASS. The expiration dates are meaningless if you have passed all four within the 18-month window.

The Ethics exam is only offered through CalCPA. I suggest the online version. Its a searchable .pdf. The test is 50 questions and you need a 90% to pass. You have three chances. Once you pass, CalCPA sends your results to the CBA. Here is the link to the Ethics exam offered by the AICPA.

@Minimorty: I'm looking to start the Ethics. What do you mean by 3 chances? I'm in VA so I think I have to buy from the AICPA site because the link from the VA board leads me there, which costs almost $160. There are 2 options on the AICPA site: CD ROM or text and I'm deliberating between the 2 options. Thanks!

@CPAexammom – Each state is different for the Ethics exam. @nnenna and I are in California, so I was explaining to him/her how California works. If you fail three times in California, you have to buy the materials again (or call and beg them to give you three more chances – which I've heard sometimes works). Unfortunately, I am not as familiar as how the process is for the other states. However, I will say that CD ROM will be better than text because you will be able to search a lot easier in the CD ROM format.

I literally just took the Ethics exam an hour ago and passed. I bought the CD and watched the videos. Videos took about 3 or 4 hours to watch. You could probably just take the test and not watch the videos if you wanted. Google is your friend. All the information you need to take the exam is on the CD and papers they send you with the CD. I then logged into the website and started taking the exam. It's all open book. It allows you to save at a certain point during the exam to resume later. It's pretty easy as the questions are asking for specific topics that are worded exactly. 40 MCQs. I missed 4 and scored a 90% so I passed. When I first logged in, it asked me to list the state in which I'd like the results to be sent to.

In Tennessee, I had 3 chances to pass online. After that I would have to use the bubble answer sheet and submit via snail mail going forward. Not sure how many more times I could do it that way though.

Overall the test is easy. Look up the answers. Get as much time as you want.

To add to mini's comments about the California exam…its graded online, so you'll know your score immediately and can retake immediately. After 3 failed online submissions, they ask you to call the CalCPA board and let them know that you failed 3 times and need 3 more. They are really nice about it, and reset your account for 3 more tries. They dont embarass you or ask why you need 3 more tries. They just reset it and thats it. Basically you get 3 more chances at no extra costs. If after 6 chances you still haven't passed, then you have to pay 50% of the fee again for 3 more chances. if after 9 chances (and god willing you dont need that many) then you have to pay 100% of the fee again.

Again this is just for CA! And its either the online searchable pdf, or they send you a text version in the mail. There are no videos to watch or other study material available.

Also, when you fail they dont tell you which questions they got wrong, but they do tell you which sections of the text you need to revisit. And the order of the suggestions is in the order of the questions you got wrong, so you can kind of figure out which questions they pertained to. My advice, mark which questions you feel strong about, mark the questionable answers, and mark where you found the answer for every single question. If you fail, only change 2-3 answers before resubmitting. Otherwise you wont be able to pinpoint which questions you've gotten wrong. I failed the first time with an 88, then the second time with an 82 because i changed some correct answers. After that I just changed a few at a time until I got my 90. You get 6 free tries, so there is no reason to be hasty and change a bunch of answers all at once.

    Pathway 1 = 2 years experience

Pathway 2 = 1 year experience if you have 150 semester units.

Pathway 1 is expiring soon, although I dont know all of the details. I am pretty sure you are grandfathered in to Pathway 1 sine you already passed the exams.

Just purchased the Ethic CD from AICPA store. I'm not sure what's the next step is. Kinda assume there will be instruction on the CD because VA board does not seem to have a separate testing module. Call the board and never can talk to any, they do respond to email though. Does any from other states have the same experience?

    Thanks for all the help…

    Pathway 2 Experience Requirements

Pathway 2 applicants have two options for licensure:

 Obtain a license without satisfying the attest experience requirement – 12 months of

general experience is required (see Page 20 – General Experience).

 Obtain a license with attest experience – 12 months of experience is required which must

include a minimum of 500 attest hours for those who want to sign attest reports as required

under Section 5095 (see Page 21 – Attest Experience).

All experience, whether obtained in public accounting or nonpublic accounting must be

performed in accordance with applicable professional standards. Experience obtained through

employment in public accounting will be considered to have met the general experience

requirement only if it was performed under the supervision of an individual holding a valid

active license to practice public accounting in the United States or its territories (Guam, Puerto

Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands) or comparable authority to practice public accounting in a foreign

    country.

Experience obtained through nonpublic accounting will be considered to have met the general

experience requirement only if it was performed under the supervision of an individual holding

a valid active license to practice public accounting in the United States.

A licensee originally issued a license to perform general accounting services may

subsequently obtain attest experience and request the Board’s acknowledgment of the

completion of attest experience. See Page 24, Satisfying the Attest Experience Requirement.

Applicants must meet the requirements for “active” status when they are approved for initial

licensure. Therefore, it is required that the applicant have current knowledge of the practice of

public accounting. This knowledge is demonstrated for initial licensure by completion of the

current CPA exam and/or license experience within the past five years.

    Pathway 2 Important Notes

 Part-time experience is calculated at 170 hours being equivalent to one month of full-time

    work.

 If the applicant’s experience, either domestic or foreign, was obtained five or more years

prior to the completion of the file, the Board may prescribe 48 hours of continuing

    education courses in specific areas.

 Applicants applying for licensure with foreign public accounting attest experience must

present work papers substantiating that their experience meets the requirements of

Section 12.5(b) of the Accountancy Regulations. As an alternative, the applicant may

acquire a minimum of 500 hours of United States experience that meets the requirements

of Section 5095(b) of the California Accountancy Act.
