Hello all I’m a junior in college and had a question regarding the education portion of obtaining CPA status in NY. I will obtain my BBA in accounting from Baruch college and I will graduate with 130 credits. My plan was to just take some random classes to get satisfy the remaining 20 credits after I graduate. I have no plans of getting a masters degree right now. Is this a viable route to take. I could also tie some more electives in to my bachelors program and graduate with around 140 credits. Thanks for reading looking forward to some feedback.

yeah that works. also you can take the exam as long as you have 120 credits with the required courses (tax, audit, intermediate, and one other course that i forgot)

Just make sure you have met the Accounting and Business Hours requirements. I had to take an additional class after they re-evaluated my degree after passing the exam. Here is the link:

    Good luck!

You can sit for the exam with 120 credits (however within those credits you must have completed a class in financial accounting, audit, tax, and cost management). After taking the exam or during you can take random classes to satisfy the 150 credit requirement, but as Esco1428 stated a certain amount out of your total 150 credits have to be business related.

By the way, just my 2 cents make sure you think about the masters route before deciding against it. While I was an undergrad I did not want to go for a masters and double majored instead, a lot of my classes for the majors overlapped and I was still stuck taking random classes (which I am not done with yet). Now looking back, I wish I didn't waste money and time on random classes and went to get my masters instead.

Although a lot of people go the route that you have chosen, you can also sit for the exam with 120 credits and then later decide for sure if you want to take the random classes or get your masters. (NY CPA scores do not expire I believe)

Anyway, everyone's situation is different, but I wish I would've done this instead, and I am considering getting my masters now.

As a Baruch Alum (May '13) I felt I owed you my 2 cents. The problem with Baruch, is all the “other tax and accounting” courses, this being Advanced Accounting II, Corporate, Partnership, and Estate Taxation, are all offered ONLY on the graduate level. Remember as previous member posted, the credits must be 36 acc 75 business, or whatever it is. Just taking 30 credits worth of ART classes won't work. If you don't do a Masters in Taxation at Baruch, then my advice is to take NonDegree courses at Hunter College for fullfill the 150 credit requirement. They offer Corporate, Estate, Taxation on the Undergrad level, etc. They have an adviser whom you can't speak with about specific courses to take etc.

THE 300 CLUB WILL DO JUST FINE!

To be honest, if you graduate from Baruch with BBA in accounting 120 credit. You will only have to take 1 extra accounting class after you graduate. NASBA recognize ACC 2101 and ACC 3202 as accounting class, you will only have to take another 3 credit to fulfill the 33 accounting requirements. (It's 33! not 36!)

And, if you by chance take economics or communication or CIS as your minor, you can then just take any random classes to push up to 150 credit. I was an economics minor and by chance I already fulfill the 36 general business requirement.

Graduated with 131 credit and all I have to do is take 1 accounting class and 16 credits in CHINESE!

I'm considering MS degree in CUNY, 15K and I get an MS. Doesn't have to be in Accounting, you can take MGT, Finance, TAX, Marketing, basically, any business degree will get you there!
