    Hi all,

I will be graduating this December from a university in Illinois and currently meet the requirements to take the exams in Illinois. As of last week, I have accepted a job offer in Michigan. Upon my research, I do not meet the educational requirements to apply to sit for the exam in Michigan (darn Govt. accounting course). If I was to take the exam in Illinois, successfully pass all sections, and meet the 1 year of experience requirement, would I experience issues with getting licensed in Michigan because of the govt. accounting course that I have not completed?

I have contacted the MI and IL Board of Examiners, counselors at my school, as well as just the General CPA hotline and received mixed answers (of course), only confusing me more.

There is no way that now I can still register for this course because of my upcoming graduation deadline in December. Any help would be appreciated.

Transferring scores does not waive educational requirements from the jurisdiction you are seeking licensure in. You will still need to submit your transcripts to LARA and meet MI's education requirements to get licensed in MI. If you're not going into public accounting, I don't see any reason not to just get licensed in IL and then later getting a MI via reciprocity if so desired.

I am going to work for a public accounting firm. What about transferring my license? I have found a post on here of someone taking the exam in Illinois without the govt. accounting course and getting their license in Michigan.

You would have to check the fine print to make sure, but yes, that should be a feasible route.

Kls32333, here are two suggestions in case you want to take a government accounting course to earn the necessary credits for Michigan:

    1. American Public University (online) – I took Business Ethics with them and it was a very smooth process to get registered, and the course was only 8 weeks long (and not terribly time-consuming). Quizzes were not proctored. The cost was around $850. Here are links to the course info page and syllabus for Governmental Accounting:

    https://www.apus.edu/course-schedule/details.html?c=ACCT410
    https://www.apus.edu/z/course-syllabus/ACCT410.pdf

    2. Louisiana State University (online) – I didn't take any courses with them, but I've heard good things about them. I believe the courses are self-paced, but I think you need to use their proctoring service to take exams. Cost is $866. Here's a link to the course info page:

Don't know if this is helpful to you, but this forum was invaluable to me in passing the CPA exam so I'm trying to pay it back, so to speak!

I had a similar problem when I graduated from an Illinois university in 2012. Michigan's requirements to sit for the exam were different than the requirements to get licensed. I ironically would meet the requirements to get a license in Michigan once I passed the exam and had the 1 year experience but couldn't meet the requirements to take the exam as a candidate for the state of Michigan. Therefore, I took the exams as a candidate for the state of Indiana. Once I passed and had my year of experience, everything went fine applying for a MI CPA license. I have been licensed since 2013 so requirements may have changed but just wanted to share my experience.

    BEC - 85
    REG - 89
    FAR - 86

    I am DONE!!!!!!

I have similar problem, but situation is worse as I may not have enough Accounting credits. Just want to know if any Finance/investment/economics credits are deemed as accounting credits? I only have 15 credits have “accounting” in the course name, but have a bunch of corporate finance, mergers and acquisition courses and so on. Michigan Board do have difference license requirement than Exam. I took CPA exam in Alaska and plan to transfer the exam scores to Michigan for license.

@lucky88 we're you able to get licensed in mIchigan? I'm in the same boat. I ended up being short business credits due to a change in Michigan's rules, and ended up taking my exams in Ohio. I was told by NASBA that I could transfer my scores and then get licensed, but now I'm thinking that won't be possible. I'd love to know if you could get licensed in Michigan without meeting the requirements there to sit for the exam!

Read the rules posted on the Michigan board of accountancy website for reciprocity. You can verify with the board but it looks like you can get licensed where you qualify then apply to MI. I did that with MT then CO. Worked like a charm but you have to verify for MI and whatever state you receive your initial license from.

    FAR 7/25/15 76!
    AUD 10/30/15 93
    BEC 2/27/16 82
    REG 5/23/16 88!
Ninja Book and MCQ and the forum - all the way!!!
and a little thing i like to call, time and effort!
if you want things to change, you have to do something different
