Colorado State Requirement Change

So in an effort to avoid future hours of schooling (for now anyways, I graduated with 126 credit hours), I looked up some states I could see myself living in that don’t require 150 credit hours. Apparently, CO is on the “old system” and the 150 credit hour requirement won’t kick in until July 1st 2015. For those of you who have applied for the licence in this state (or in general), how long does the process typically take?

I’m debating on finishing my last two parts by May 31st, take the Ethics Exam (downside of switching states), and applying as soon as NASBA releases the scores for that second testing window. The rule is to apply and be granted the license by July 1st to be certified. Thoughts? Too risky?

    AUD-96 (1/11/2015)
    REG-76 (5/31/2015)
    BEC-87 (11/13/2015)

I'm also a Colorado candidate. NASBA sent an email out a few weeks ago that basically said as long as COMPLETED applications are in by June 15th, 2015. You can still get by with the previous requirements. Sounds like your May 31st plan will work, as long as you pass the exams.

Also – you can take the Ethics exam whenever you want. I took mine two months ago in anticipation of getting everything in on time as well.

ZManCPA, did you find any other state that does not require the 150 hours to get the license besides Colorado? I know in most states you dont have to have the 150 hrs to take the exam, but to be licensed, you need the extra credits. The only one I know where you can also get the CPA license is Colorado.

Martin- Yeah I mainly only looked at states I want to live in. I like where I am currently so the place has to be worth the move.

Out of all the states where you looked, the only one where you can get license without the 150 hrs is Colorado? Im not planning to work in Public Accounting,so I dont really care in which state I get the license, I just want to avoid doing the extra credits, but it seems that my only option was Colorado.

@CPA HOPEFUL- thanks for you're input.

Martin-I also looked at Arizona, Utah, California, New York, Texas, and Florida. All needed at least 150 hrs. Colorado was the only one that didn't need it. That of course is changing soon though

I would allow a lot more time than 2 weeks if you are trying to be certified under the old rules. As I understand it, the license must be issued prior to July 1, 2015.

I submitted my application on December 18 and I just received notice of approval and preparation for transmission to the State Board on Friday, Feb 6. I was qualifying under the education in lieu of experience rule, so they did not need to verify any experience on my application. It may take longer if they have to verify experience, but I'm not sure.

I also received the email referenced above, but I don't quite understand how they are going to process all the applications in two weeks. All of my accounting professors and advisers have indicated to me that the license must be issued by July 1, but maybe something changed with how they are handling the deadline, because it does read as if you can submit on June 15. That seems risky to me though. I would definitely get confirmation from NASBA Licensing Services (a separate department from Examination Services) before proceeding.

Here's the link to that email sent Jan 26. – https://t.e2ma.net/message/vdyum/f5swwt

    REG (July 2014) - Pass
    AUD (Aug 2014) - Pass
    FAR - (Nov 2014) - Pass
    BEC - (Dec 2014) - Pass

    Licensed Colorado CPA (February 2015)

    DONE!!!!

I would do the ethics right away even before passing the last exam. File the application right away after the passing score and hope for the best. I got approved in the board meeting on 28th Jan notified on 2nd Feb 2015.

It is a tight deadline if you finish by 31st May.

Further Colorado does need 150 credits ( relevant credits) for license.

    AUD - 84
    REG - 82

@syoung123 those were my thoughts exactly. Two weeks might be pushing in, and surely there will be a giant wave of applications in that time frame with other folks trying to capitalize on the opportunity. I decided its best to just suck it up and get the 150. That way I'll be flexible in which states I can practice in. Thanks for your input!

@h0wdyus thank you. I decided I'm just going to tough it out and work for the 150 while studying for REG & BEC.

If you guys do not make it to the deadline, the following is plan B if you do not want to study anymore for the extra 30 credits.
