Clarification of NASBA Substantial Equivalency

I am hoping someone can clarify substantial equivalency for me. Currently, I am working in North Carolina at a firm and am preparing to submit my application for the CPA exam. I meet all the requirements of NC. My husband is probably going to be transferred to Maryland at the beginning of 2017. My goal is to pass all 4 parts prior to this and become licensed in NC. I already have accumulated over three years of public accounting experience.

My coursework does not allow me to sit in Maryland as Maryland is very specific about the accounting courses that you have to take. I have 30 hours but not in all the accounting specific areas they require.

Assuming I become licensed in NC, will substantial equivalency allow me reciprocity with Maryland for the education portion? I don’t see anything on the MD website regarding the submission of transcripts for a reciprocal license, nor do I see a requirement for a certain years of prior CPA licensed experience required.

Just trying to determine if I should start the CPA exam or hold off until I take another class….I really don’t want to take another course.

If you have a current license and you are applying through reciprocity, you shouldn't have to provide transcripts. The whole idea behind SE is to make the process more efficient, and make it easier to take your CPA license to a different state if you move. NASBA

You can always check with the Maryland board to make sure they honor reciprocity requests from North Carolina.
