Can you change your CPA candidacy state after passing the exams?

For example, if I applied to sit for the CPA Exam under the California Board of Accountancy, and later decided that I don’t want to practice accounting but still want the CPA Certificate, could I change my CPA candidacy to Alabama so that I can get the certification without completing work experience? (After completing the 150 rule and the Ethics Exam ofcourse. Just not the work experience.)

*Alabama is a two-tier state that allows candidates to choose between a license which requires work experience, and a certificate which does not require work experience but has limits in using the CPA title in documents.

If AL doesn't have a residency requirement, yes, you can most likely switch and get the certificate in Alabama.

What you need to be careful about though is whether or not that actually allows you to call yourself a CPA in the state where you live/work.

For example, I'm going through the process here in Illinois, but I expect to move to Missouri soon after finishing. My understanding per a discussion with somebody at the MO Board of Accountancy is that Missouri won't allow me to call myself a CPA unless I have a Missouri license.

    REG 8/17/2011 | Fingers crossed

Also check the state's reciprocation policies. Some will accept license reciprocation from nearby states, or have an entire listing of states accepted and not accepted. For initial registrations, there might be a two-tier system also.

    Couldn't pass again!

Here's information I found on the Uniform CPA Examination Handbook from California:

“California only will accept exam scores if the applicant met California’s degree conferral and core-course education requirements of 48 semester units of accounting and business-related subjects, including a minimum of 24 semester units in accounting subjects, prior to obtaining credit status on the CPA Exam. California considers credit status as the date a candidate physically sat for the exam, not the date the score was released by your state.”

I ask not because I want to transfer to California. I'm actually registered in California. But if California has this kind of rule I'm afraid that Delaware won't allow me to transfer my California exam scores to their state. I have the 120 hours required for California, and also Delaware, but Delaware speficies that I take a class in Auditing which I haven't yet. If I pass exams in California, without taking an Audit class, will that bite me in the ass later when I decide I might transfer to Delaware?
