CA candidate question

I have a question. I applied to be a CPA in SC but have not met the experience requirement of 2,000 hours under a CPA. I have 6 years under an Accounting Practioner that don’t count.

I have over 150 hours of education credits, including business and accounting credits and a BBA in Accounting.

Is it too late for me to apply to be a CPA in CA? Doesn’t CA have a CPA designation that can do everything but review audits (which I have no intentions of ever doing)?

Doesn't CA have a CPA designation that can do everything but review audits? Yes we do. that is exactly what I am getting.

Is it too late for me to apply to be a CPA in CA? I doubt it. For instance if you passed the exam 2 years ago in Sc and moved to CA I don't they would say oh you have to go through SC to get your licence. The exam is uniform so it can transfer anywhere.

We do have an ethics portion that you have to pass though which is not uniformed. You are still required to work under a licence active CPA for a year doing general accounting work.

    hope this helps

CA has a general license that requires 1 year general accounting experience (pathway 2 with 150 credit units) under a licensed CPA doing any kind of accounting, tax, or consulting work. So long as that CPA is willing to certify your hours and believes that the work has qualified you to perform all the requirements of the profession. With the general license you get a “G” on your license instead of an “A” signifying that you are not licensed to do any attest work, but you can still use the CPA designation.

I'm also getting the “G” designation for my CA license. Unfortunately Allyson, you will still need to get the experience under a CPA.

    (from CBA website)

“A” This licensee completed the experience required to perform the full range of accounting services, including signing attest reports on attest engagements.

“G” This licensee completed the experience required, except attest experience, and therefore is not authorized to sign reports on attest engagements. This licensee can perform all other accounting services and may also participate in attest engagements.

By the way, you can always get your attestation experience if you so desire and change your license type with the CBA.

    Thanks!

I was reading over the licensure booklet and saw required experience under a public licensed accountant. An Accounting Practioner is licensed in SC but I think the CBA means an actual CPA. I'll read it in more depth.

Hey, guys, how do you get an avatar?

Allyson, do you want to practice in SC? Can you do that with a CA designation?

I will practice in SC but I do work for clients all over the country. I'm just trying to avoid having to get a second job when the one I have now is perfect, except for the not working for a licensed CPA part.

I sent an inquiry e-mail to the CBA.

Look at the state Colordo I beleive that if you have 150 units you do not need the work experience and will still have a CPA licience. I was going to get licience there but my new boss acctually have his licience and he is willing to sign my paperwork so I took the CA route.

    @Allyson,

I have a similar problem with TX licensing, which is why I'm getting licensed in CA first. CA accepts certain experience that other states, like TX, don't. Unfortunately, I can't practice as a CPA in TX until I'm licensed here. I can't even put CPA after my name on business cards for my TX bookkeeping business even if I'm licensed in CA. I can have CPA on my resume though.

I've found it helpful to contact the legal department of the TX state board to find out what I can and can't do in TX without a TX license. You might consider contacting the SC board and doing the same.

What I found out today: CA says my “supervisor needs to be licensed by the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation”. He is a licensed Accounting Practioner by them, but not a CPA.

SC is like TX. The board will not let me call myself a CPA in SC with a CA license. They said they will not accept reciprocity without the 2,000 hours under a CPA.

CO also said my experience needs to be under a licensed CPA.

Started posting resumes for that second job today…

I'm sorry, Allyson. I feel your pain. It's ridiculous that the requirements aren't identical from state to state. What a pain in the @ss. Rawrrrr.

CBA e-mailed me and said they would consider my experience under a licensed public accountant. I may apply in CA afterall.

I may start with the CA ethics exam. I hear it is pretty hard. Any suggestions? Like electronic vs. text format?

get the .pdf version of the test. You can search keywords. The text is 300+ pages.
