I would like to know if anyone has been in my position and had success obtaining a license.

Arizona, like many states, require that students have 36 credit hours in accounting specific classes. 30 of these ACC hours must be upper level accounting courses. I’ve already called the state board of accountancy and they are unable to give me an answer on whether certain credits are “upper division” until i submit my final application. I am 1 test away from being done with the exams and I am looking for someone to help put my mind at ease.

I am certain that I have 24 upper division ACC courses. My question is, I received an MBA from a state school and took two 500 level classes. One was ACC 502 financial accounting and the other was ACC 503 managerial accounting. I am concerned that they are going to consider these principle/intro accounting classes since they really are a basic accounting class, but taught at the 500 level. Has anyone ran into a problem where the board rejected these classes as upper division? Thanks in advance for your help. It would be terrible to have to go back to school AGAIN after the MBA and now these ridiculous exams.

I should also clarify that the 24 hours of upper division DO NOT include the two MBA 500 level ACC courses. So if the board counts the two MBA courses, I will have 30 hours, if not, i will need to take two more classes.

My understanding has always been that “upper level” meant “300 and above”, so I would anticipate that you're fine. However, I will admit I have much more experience with undergrad than graduate work, so I don't know for certain!

thanks for the response. I agree that makes sense. The only information I could find was that in florida, their website specifically says MBA ACC classes do not count as upper division.

Huh. Of course we can hope that FL is the “oddball” in this regard…but that definitely does give reason for concern. 😐 If you do end up needing these extra classes, the good news is that there's a lot of people on here that have posted their best sources for quick, easy upper-level accounting courses, so hopefully it wouldn't be too much trouble to get them. It's odd that the AZ board won't evaluate the credits for you now. 🙁
