Any issues with legal name change?

I’m in the process of getting a court-ordered name change for my last name, in preparation for my upcoming wedding when I’ll change my name a 2nd time. I know I need to report the change (once it’s legal) to the CPA Board, but I was wondering if anyone’s had any issues with this in the past? Any lost exam credits or confusion when applying for the license?

I got married a few years ago and asked NASBA about changing my name legally. They said it's best to wait if you have an open NTS (but doable from what I gathered). I decided to wait until after I'm licensed because it seemed like too much to deal with while studying.

    Congrats!

Thank you for the tip! I have an open NTS, but I'm still waiting on a federal background check in order to go any further with the process. It's possible that I won't get through the legal process until after the change, but hopefully not. I'm unfortunately racing the clock because if I don't get the first change done and my ID's changed before the wedding, he can't get his changed after the wedding. I always have to make things more complicated LOL!

    Thank you!

Out of curiosity, why can't you do it after? Wondering because my MIL had told me there was only a certain # of days after, but a coworker told me otherwise. Maybe it's a law that varies by region. Give NASBA a call. They'll figure out what you need to do.

I'm first changing my given surname to another due to family history. After the wedding we're planning to double-barrel our last names, but in order for him to do that with my new surname it has to be on all my documents prior to applying for the marriage license (you can only change your name to one that is listed on the marriage license). Otherwise he'll have to go through a court-ordered process as well.

Basically the post-marriage name change is the easy one. But if you ever want to change your name for any reason other than marriage/divorce, it's a much bigger deal. The Social Security office sets the standard in the US, so all name change documents are valid for 2 years. Fun facts from someone who's been researching this for far too long LOL!

Thank you. That all sounds really complicated, so I'd better get moving with my own name change.

My husband's last name is Patton so I am Patton Pending. πŸ™‚

Hahahaha that's great! Don't get too nervous – it should be pretty straightforward if you've got all the docs. Mine's over-complicated because I didn't change my name when I should have 6 years ago.

    Good luck!
