Am I Wasting My Time??

This is a condensed version of a question I asked earlier, but haven’t received any responses – I think it may have been too long. Here are the essentials.

Present day, I’m working for a large British company doing internal auditing. No one in my department has their CPA. A few managers in my department have their English equivalent (chartered accountant), but no one in my office in GA.

Based on the GA state board rules for licensure (https://rules.sos.state.ga.us/docs/20/3/08.pdf), I don’t think I’ll ever qualify for my CPA license if I stay with this company. Here are my questions:

    1. Is there any way I could still get my license?

    2. If I pass all of the exams and I don’t qualify to get my license, is there any benefit of having took them? OR

    3. Am I wasting my time taking these exams?

I’ve already invested quite a bit of time with FAR and REG, so I’m looking for any reason to just finish it out. Any suggestions/tips/answers will be GREATLY appreciated.

Do you want to stay with that company or do you want to go somewhere else?

If you are interested in making the switch to public accounting, passing the exams would be beneficial since a public accounting firm could easily get you the work requirements.

I wouldn't say you are wasting your time taking the exams, but it really just depends on what your future plans are.

    REG - 93 (7/30/13)
    BEC - 90 (8/19/13)
    AUD - 98 (8/31/13)
    FAR - 84 (10/19/13)

Some states will accept an external CPA sign off on your work if they supervise and review what you do. For example, if your firm uses an outside CPA for tax or audit work, they may be able to sign your experience form if you work closely with them. I have heard of this situation, but I have never seen it in practice. If you have a good relationship with your employer, perhaps they would agree to hiring the CPA firm to complete your work experience requirements. It would be an investment in you as an employee if you became a CPA on their staff and stuck around for a few years.

If you really like the company you probably shouldn't get the CPA. Why not become a charted accountant? ASSUMING the US goes full IFRS your skills as a charted accountant will be in more demand than even CPAs. You can market yourself in the US as an expert at IFRS and probably get some high end accounting jobs or be a consultant if you like.

That being said if we never go full IFRS my above statement is horrible advice 🙂

You could become a CMA….if you want to work in private accounting. If you want to work in public accounting in the US and leave your current job than become a CPA. I would also call your state accountancy board and see if they will allow a chartered accountant to sign off on your work experience. It is possible since it a comparable distinction.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

South Florida recruiters dont care if you are license here. As long as you passed all 4 parts and your license is active in another state, you are good to go.

    FAR-84
    AUD-
    REG-
    BEC-

Thanks everyone for your responses, I do appreciate it. I'm just going to go ahead and get it over with and then see what my company can do.

Auslaf, I do work closely with Pwc and KPMG on various audits, so maybe I can have them sign off for me. Also, I know our accounting and tax department have CPA's so maybe I can do some work with them and get signed off that way. I don't know, but I'm too far in to not get it now.

    Have a good week everyone!

just buckle down and finish the two remaining, you will only have wasted time if you stop now, which would be ridiculous after coming this “far”, a few more months and you will be done and be glad you continued!!!

    Licensed CPA!

I am in total agreement to finish. Finishing gives you hope for the future. You may not see it today, but tomorrow will be very different after passing. Go for it…get it done you won't have to visit the test ever again.

    It begins with a 75
Been here too long as a cheerleader....ready to pass
