AICPA or FICPA?

Hi everyone– I am a licensed CPA in FL as of 3/2013 and I’m debating on whether I should join the AICPA or renew my FICPA membership. My employer will only cover one of the memberships–so I have to choose.

I don’t believe that FICPA membership is required and I haven’t really gotten anything out of it (other than a bunch of junk mail or really expensive CPE offerings) but I want to see if anyone can provide some input on what they’ve gotten out of their memberships in either AICPA or their respective State’s CPA society.

    BEC - 86
    FAR - 76
    AUD - 73, 86
    REG - 61, 73, 82

    DONE!!

That's a good question, and let me ask it in a more general form (not just for FL). For those of you who might know, would you recommend joining your state CPA society or the AICPA if you only could pick one, and why?

I would go with the AICPA. The annual dues are about the same, but your AICPA membership includes the Journal of Accountancy…I joined the FICPA in January mainly because I wanted to attend their meetings, but they have not had any in my area during 2013…lol… =[

It depends on how much spam and advertising email you wish to receive. As far as I can tell, that's the main result of joining any of the professional societies.

The Journal of Accountancy does have some good info at times and so does the equivalent state thing that comes to me, in California.

My firm pays for both. If they didn't, I'd choose the AICPA over the state one.
