6 week exam application processing time?

Here is the quote from the cba.ca.gov website:

“You have successfully created an Application Remittance Form. You have now completed Step 3 in the CPA Exam application process. Sign the form and send it with the appropriate fee to the California Board of Accountancy.

NOTE: Due to the large volume of examination applications we are currently experiencing, processing times are presently beyond the typical 30 days. Processing time frames are at approximately six weeks. We ask for your patience as we process applications in the order they are received. Updated application information will be posted to client accounts as it becomes available.”

Now here’s the predicament I’m in. I failed the FAR exam and need to retake it and I am hoping to retake it by the first week of January because I will be going under some major jaw surgery on during the second week of January that will render me potentially unable to take the exam for 4-6 weeks because that will be how long it takes me to recover. I sent in a new remittance form the day I received my score (December 8).

So, assuming I’m reading cba.ca.gov correctly, I won’t receive a confirmation to schedule my next FAR exam until approximately 6 weeks from now, which would be beyond my goal date. In addition, I was studying for AUD while waiting for my FAR exam score and covered about half or less of the material. I can possibly finish studying/reviewing the remaining AUD material by the first week of January and take that instead if I don’t receive my FAR confirmation. My question to the forum is should I put off FAR for now and study for AUD or stay focused on FAR in hopes that I receive confirmation before my surgery date (while also hoping there is an available date to schedule the FAR exam)?

FYI for all California applicants. Always go ahead and create/pay/submit an application while waiting on scores. If you pass they will refund your money. It's best to get the ball rolling while you wait. This is advice I received from CBA examination unit.

@Vagrant – how many sections have you passed? Is the clock running? Have you already applied and paid for AUD?

I have not passed any sections yet as FAR was the first CPA exam I have ever taken [and failed 🙁 ]. I paid for all 4 sections when I sent in my first remittance form.

As a note to your FYI, I think I read/heard somewhere that we should not send in payments before receiving exams and that we do not receive refunds, but I guess if the CBA examination unit said otherwise, then dang 😐

So, I did the same thing you did. I applied for my first set all at once and paid upfront. If I had to do it again, I would have only paid for 2 at a time. Sure it might cost an extra $50, but that's better than wasting $200 on an exam that you aren't prepared for because you run out of time.

    When does your NTS expire?

Depending on your schedule, and availability to study, you may need to focus only on the exams you paid for and circle back to FAR, last.

IMHO, keep with AUD, and do everything you can to pass it right before your surgery. Then, use the recovery time to review FAR and retake it 6-8 weeks later. Then make sure you schedule your last 2 exams with enough time to cover the material. If there is enough time.

My first NTS expires on 07/08/13, but my Roger CPA exam review course expires on 8/31/13. I'm not currently working (although I should be), but this gives me a greater amount of time to study. I just need to focus.

And thanks for the response. I really appreciate it.

edit: probably a stupid question, but I guess the 6 week processing time is more or less set in stone?

My last reapplication to CA took less than a week to get processed. And that was two weeks ago…. I think they are talking about NEW applicaitons. Reappliations NEVER take that long. Hope this helps

I don't remember how long my reapplication took to process. But I would trust Littlenumber – she won't steer you wrong.

Definitely focus! You can do this 🙂 Just get serious about it and knock those tests out of the park. Make studying your full time job. There is a AUD study group thread for people testing in Jan/Feb, you might find additional encouragement and help there.

    Good Luck!

Hmm…If “renewed” applications take a week or less, then that means I should receive confirmation in time to retake the FAR exam before my surgery date. If that's the case, then I can focus on FAR again while it's still somewhat fresh in my head and push AUD off til afterwards.

Does anyone know how long it takes to receive your new NTS?
