1st time applicant, new graduate, questions about sending supporting materials

I am a new applicant for CPA exam candidacy. the district in which I will be taking my exam, Rhode Island, requires that i provide the powers-that-be a copy of my official transcript and diploma as proof of my credit and degree requirement.

I requested that my school send the official transcript, so i should (hopefully…) have no trouble on that end.

My problem, however, lies in sending them a copy of my diploma, which I have not received yet. I graduated 5/19 and all I received was the silly diploma box. the real diploma has still yet to arrive in the mail.

I want to make sure that I can get my diploma to the folks at the examination services hq, in a timely manner, so that my application is not denied and I will not have to pay the $145 fee again.

any ideas on what to do here?

I already emailed my academic adviser from my university asking for her assistance, and plan on calling tomorrow (monday) to make sure they are aware of my situation.

should I also call my state’s board of accountancy (RI) or a national organization to let them know of my predicament? ( i will most likely do this anyways)

im already out $335 in first time applicant fee’s and the AUD exam fee, and i’d prefer not have to spend more money in purchasing either item again because my application was denied due to a problem such as the one detailed above. i dont start at CLA until october, so until then, im trying to be as frugal as possible.

are you sure they want to see a diploma? That's odd. Usually they want to see proof a degree was conferred, which should be shown on your transcript if you requested it a few weeks after your graduation.

I also thought the diploma thing was odd but I checked the RI NASBA site and it does say a copy of the diploma is required. I am betting you are not the only person in this situation. Just give them a call and see what your best bet is. Hopefully they can help you!

Best of luck with the exam!

Yea very bizarre. I took at look at their requirements myself and they definitely require that diploma! My suggestion would be to call them regarding your application and explain your situation. I doubt they would make you pay twice as opposed to waiting an extra week or two for the diploma to be submitted. Below is some contact information I pulled from the Rhode Island Nasba section. Good luck!

mla1169- yes, they really do ask for a copy of the diploma, just like IwannaBaCPA confirmed.

    here is the requirement: https://nasba.org/exams/cpaexam/rhodeisland/

(you'll need to click “more” under where it says “Materials to be Submitted with Application”)

So so weird. Well maybe your school will overnight a copy for a fee much smaller than losing your exam fees!
