150 semester hours of college credit… does Engineering count ?

The state where I’m thinking of applying (Massachusetts, if that makes a difference) requires all CPAs to have 150 semester hours of college credit.

    I have:

–> 4 year undergraduate engineering degree from a good Canadian school, plus

    –> MBA from a top-15 US school.

Do you think that this will likely meet the 150 hour requirement? Can an engineering degree count towards the 150 hours, or does the 150 hours have to be in accounting etc?

    FAR 66 FAIL Feb 2015
    FAR 79 PASS May 2015
    BEC 89 PASS Aug 2015
    AUD 83 PASS Nov 2015
    REG 76 PASS Feb 2016

Applying for non-reporting Massachusetts CPA license

I'm assuming you've already checked out this page? https://nasba.org/exams/cpaexam/massachusetts/

It doesn't specifically say a bachelor's degree in accounting (or even business!) like other states I've seen, so I'm thinking at first glance you're okay, assuming you've had 21 credits of accounting and 9 credits of additional business courses.

Having gone to a Canadian school, you'll also have to submit your transcripts to The Center for Educational Documentation (CED) and NASBA International Evaluation Services.

For what it's worth, in California you don't need a bachelor's degree in accounting at all. I have no degree in accounting (but enough units) and I got cleared within 1 week of sending my application fee to take the exam.

    AUD - 7/5/13 - 93
    FAR - 8/24/13 - 91
    BEC - 11/30/13 - 92
    REG - 2/24/14 - 91! DONE!

    jennknee,

I have a quick question for you. If they dont require a bachelors in Accounting to take the CPA exam, how do you get licensed after you are done with all 4 parts? You wouldnt need additional accounting classes to satisfy the 150 hr requirement?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Yes I would need to take some other classes (mostly ethics to meet the new 2014 licensure requirements). I have well over 150 units now, because of all the accounting classes I took.

    AUD - 7/5/13 - 93
    FAR - 8/24/13 - 91
    BEC - 11/30/13 - 92
