You can ask for an extension on the 18 mo. rule - Page 4

A board member on my state’s board told me that any time someone has asked for an extension they have given the candidate an extra 6 months without letting any exam scores lapse. I had never heard of this before and figured it would help people out. He said the board gets fewer than 10 requests for this a year. I just wanted to share since I have never heard anyone on these boards talk about it.

Thanks Katie. I'm in WA which luckily is big enough that you're probably safe even if you come for a visit one day. Although now I'm dying to know which post of mine made someone want to avoid an entire state!

Did anyone notice that this is @jblevy10‘s first and only post on the Forum?!?! The poor guy!

I just want to point out that it seems like when an alum makes a bold statement, they are automatically trolling, an a$$hole, insensitive, etc, etc. But when someone is still in the process of taking the exam, they can say whatever they want.

Jeff, I respect you and would like to adhere to your guidelines, so I apologize if I ever do or say anything that falls outside of them. But I want to point out that Mini and Sandra were attacked here and I'm scracthing my head trying to figure out why. Mini has become an easy target and even I've given him crap before, but he truly has a passion for the designation. One of the users once said, “It's stupid to be on a Public Forum and to not want to hear what people have to say.” I agree with that statement.

Mini says a lot of things that I roll my eyes at but then I tell him how I feel and move on. I think others need to do the same. If you guys can't stand him, why don't you just ignore him?

From what I read, I don't know if Kricket was pissed about what Mini said or just the fact that this kind of stuff always comes up and she's sick of defending herself. At least that's my impression.

Oh and anyone that takes offense to what I've said: “LOL, JK! 😀 😉 🙂 ;)”

*sigh* I hope I don't regret throwing my hat into the ring on this one because I do NOT want to be involved in any “flame wars”…but here goes.

I would say that my instincts lean towards the unpopular opinion…that is to say, I think that a hard 18-month timeline is fair and justifiable. Certain circumstances will always come up in life that may preclude or delay you from accomplishing your goals (be it the CPA exam or something else). I think it's very unfortunate when that happens, but I don't think any circumstances should warrant an extension. If someone is in the middle of the window and the worst should happen that would prevent him/her from passing all four parts in a timely manner, I think he/she should take a break and start over when his/her life circumstances allow it. That's just my personal opinion.

@Jeff – Very true about some people are poor test takers but have good personalities and vice versa, however, you need a combination of personality and technical prowess to succeed in the business world. I don't think a person who possesses only one of those attributes would make a very good CPA. Unfortunately, you only need the technical ability to become a CPA, but those people will be weeded out with time if they lack the soft skills that are critical in facilitating business relationships. But 18 months and a passing score is a measure of one's technical knowledge and ability to apply that knowledge to different situations. An employer has to be comfortable that he/she can put an employee in front of the client without any concern as well as have confidence in the employee's ability to utilize their “expertise” in addressing technical situations without taking excessive time to comb through his/her books.

Losing a credit isn't the end of the world…it happened to me (FAR) and I'm probably better for it because it caused me to choose: keep going or give up.

Passing FAR is hard enough – getting the motivation to re-pass it takes some doing.

    I passed my next 2 exams – including a 92 and I was done.

    Keep Moving Forward.

IMHO, there is a huge difference between stating “I think the 18 month rule should be hard and fast without exceptions” and stating “I think that if you can't pass in 18 months, you've got no business getting your license”.

To me, Sandra seems to be of the formere category, and Mini (much as I adore him) seems to be of the latter.

So here's going to be what is likely an exceptionally unpopular opinion: If you're tough enough to handle these exams in the first place, you ought to be tough enough to handle a message board. If you are upset by what you read here, chances are you are exhausted, burnt out and overwhelmed with the entire process. Totally understandable, take a break if needed, stick to where you can find unconditional support (if such a place exists?) and come back when you're feeling up to it 🙂

I'm an internet purest so I personally enjoy hearing viewpoints from ALL sides including the radical ones. While I think having the forum for support is awesome, the Kumbaya moments that some people ONLY want to hear 24/7 after a while make me vomit in my mouth a little.

People who sit for this exam come from ALL different types of backgrounds and I like that. Some people go in there and just kill all four exams in one window with little effort. If they want to come here and brag how awesome they are, that's cool with me. At the other end of the spectrum some have been sitting for 10 years, 30 something attempts and still are struggling through it. If they're looking for some support, plenty of people here would love to help out or even just provide encouragement. That's cool with me too.

The important thing is for EVERYONE to respect other opinions. That doesn't mean you have to water it down. You read what is written and choose to agree or disagree. Too many people are either overly sensitive because of failure or overly douchy because of past success. That's where this animosity comes from and to these people I repeat what some of my fellow posters have been saying:

    Chill out, it's just a test…

If someone doesnt agree that the 18 month window can get expanded for extenuating circumstances that is ridiculous on their part. There are a lot of things that could happen that could hurt them and push them past the 18 month mark and ruin their effort that they've put in.

I'm glad someone like Mini isn't in the state board, because if one of these circumstances happened to someone and they got denied an extension their could quite possibly be an extremely negative reaction.

So Mini if your wife/child/father/mother gets cancer and passes away after a year long struggle, I imagine your job should tell you that you cant take days off because other people are not facing the same issues? Get over yourself. Reading your posts angered me to the point to where if I said what I really wanted to say i'd get kicked off this forum

@bm – I see no relevancy to your comment about employee benefits to the discussion at hand. They are completely separate issues. Death, illness, and disability are all facts of life. Experiencing one, or more, of these does not make a person special. I've already outlined my position as to why I dont think the window should be extended for anyone. You are entitled to disagree, just as I am entitled to my position.

Anyone getting that angry over a forum post, regardless what it says has bigger problems than trying to pass the CPA exam.

That being said- I like puppies much better than rabbits. I'm actually thinking about getting a new dog.

Well Sandra – you *did* say that you can count at least 10 people in this forum who shouldn't be CPAs.

I can see someone getting angry over that.
