Hello, will the AICPA not issue a CPA license if you owe back taxes? …asking for a friend 😉 Does anyone have any insight on this?

    Thanks!

Well its actually the state board who is going to issue you a CPA license, not the AICPA. And I doubt they would not issue it just for owing some back taxes, given that the state board and your state's taxing agency are completely unrelated. However, it all probably depends. If you have a fraudulent return floating around out there and are evading tax, that is one thing. But if you owed in 2012 or some crap and owe $500 with some penalties, then I have serious doubts about that holding you back.

I don't have any hard proof either way, this is just an opinion from a CPA who also happens to work in tax 🙂

    Either way, pay your taxes!

Considering that not filing a personal tax return is an act discreditable to the profession, I'd say that if you owe taxes there is probably going to be an issue getting your license issued..

oh dear, duh, I meant the state board! AHHHH. would have gotten that question wrong on exam day!

definitely nothing fraudulent, i'm self employed and calculated my estimated payments wrong- nothing too major but figured it would hold up the process if and when I get there!

Yeah I don't know what level of scrutiny the state boards will put on that, but I wouldn't be surprised if they at least inquired. Its not acts discredible because you filed the tax return, but just underpaid the tax you owe based on a miscalculation. They will be more gracious with human error, especially small potatoes like this.

Again, no worries at all if you pay the tax 🙂
