Sitting before Graduating

Hi everyone. So I’m a student in PA who wants to be CPA certified in NY. I graduate in May and will have 150 hours by the end of the summer (with summer classes). So I applied to NY but apparently there are a handful of accounting classes that MUST be taken before sitting for ANY part of the exam (including Auditing, which I am taking now). So with that being said, they will not give me a NTS before I graduate.

Is it advisable to apply then in PA (where the rules are less stringent) and then after obtaining all of my credits, transfer the passed portion of the exam to NY?

Ideally I’d like to be certified in NY since that is where I’ll be working so I think it makes the most sense, or if it even matters where I take the test.

Let me know what you think. Thanks for all your help.

Some people in GA at my school have this problem with sitting before actually receiving their undergraduate diploma. In this case our MAcc adviser has to contact NASBA for an exception and they are able to sit. Maybe check with your adviser to see if he/she can get that exception.

Hi, am somewhat familiar with NY and PA rules. Some pluses and minuses to consider:

If you transfer your exam scores to NY, NY may look at your education requirements and decide whether or not you have enough. If you're short school credits, you might be asked to take more classes before the license is issued, and this is whether or not you're done with all the exams. (If you're halfway through, you could run into NTS problems trying to take the test for NY)

A plus is that NY considers PA to have equivalent licensing requirements for reciprocity; it's just that if you decide to license in PA and transfer it to NY, NY wants 4 years of prior work experience.

In terms of experience, PA requires 400/1600 hours in attestation, whereas NY doesn't care what kind of work experience you get as long as a CPA signs for 1 year's worth.

    Couldn't pass again!
