Should I Appeal an Exam Score? - Page 2

I know this sounds like sour grapes from the start but I have two reasons I am considering paying the $400 to see my exam.

    1. When I signed out after the exam Prometric lost my exam and could not find it. Another employee said it just looked like it was lost but really was not. They did not find it before I left the testing center but he assured me it was fine. I believed him until I saw my score report.

    2. I felt extremely confident on MC and especially on Governmental. I teach a class on governmental accounting so I know what right is. My exam review said I was weak in Governmental, strong in not for profit, comparable in everything else to passing candidates. Then at the bottom weaker overall in MC.

If they did locate my exam and these are my true scores then I am really confused about where to go from here. I need to see it to see what to change because I would have bet my house that I did really well on MC and governmental. I concede that my simulations were not as strong. I could have failed based on Sims but I don’t see it based on MC.

    Can anyone offer any advice?

Stop getting hung up on how you “felt” the exam went. The nature of these tests makes them impossible to get a feel of how your doing. I had one of my college professors (Finance/Cost Accounting guy) tell me BEC was his worst section even though he's a finance professor. Just because you felt good or thought you knew questions in an area doesn't mean you actually got them right.

I'm sure they have pretty strict guidelines in terms of which exam is assigned to which person so I don't think it would have been easy for them to just “assign” you someone else's exam.

I know it sucks, but you've got to just keep going. Even if you did get in there and find out it wasn't your exam what do you think they would do? They aren't going to be able to find it at that point I'm sure, so you'd likely have to retake anyway.

It is not that I think it is impossible that I failed because I felt my performance on Sims was not strong. I ran out of time on the last SIM. Maybe since they don't give you your real or raw score they just said your Sims are bad enough that we are going to give you a 67 to drive home the point you are that far off the mark.

Honestly I did not feel I should have passed BEC with the 30 hours of studying that I did so maybe this is karma coming around. I put in well over 100 quality hours on this one.

Either way, the gloves are off and the war paint is on. I have a NTS for AUD and REG. I think I might apply to take FAR and take it with REG by the end of November if they can process my paperwork that quick.

You know, the funny thing I was thinking, is that if you appeal an exam score and are successful, they might just make you sign an agreement that the score change will not be disclosed. Then we will all go on thinking that no one is successful in an appeal, where in fact many people are getting scores changed. LOL

    Food for thought…

dxfish5 that is a nice thought but I think I am going to have to move on and buckle down for 2 exams in November. I can't justify the money for the benefit of knowing. I have been reviewing FAR stuff since the exams and I am hopeful I can pull off two exams in the same window. I am very determined but have the same issue as everyone and that is limited time.

Thanks to everyone for input on this. I'll be around and look forward to sharing the next part of my cpa journey with all of you.

Hey, good luck with your tests this window! I have a question tho, what do you mean by prometric lost your exam?? I have only sat once but I don't remember seeing anything when I was leaving the testing center that indicated if they had my exam or not? I guess i am confused on how they could lose a test? After reading your story I'm starting to get worried. I know it's just anxiety but I take BEC Tuesday so I just wanted to make sure that I am not like forgetting to do something when I'm leaving prometric.

I spent a couple of miserable hours on the phone with Prometric and I think the anxiety I felt about the TA not being able to find my exam on the screen may have been poor communication and knowledge on the TA's part. I finished what I could of my exam and used the last few minutes to review answers instead of hitting submit and take the survey at the end. When time is up your exam is stopped and transmitted. The TA, I was told by Prometric, could not see my survey not my exam. The TA told me my exam was missing but in reality the survey was missing. I believe this to be true. It must be very easy to have quality controls with launch codes and current technology. I would not worry about it further.

Hi, I see that it was a misunderstanding now, but was that the testing center in Greensboro? I took a test there today, and two of us taking the test had problems because the screen kept freezing. They said there were problems with it on Saturday too, and those people had to reschedule. It didn't start freezing until I was on my second to last simulation, so that was really annoying because I was almost finished. Once they got my screen unfrozen, I moved on to the last question, where it froze again. Once they got it unfrozen the second time, I was able to finish the test, but I decided to answer the last question on the AUD simulation without looking at authoritative guidance because that particular screen is the one that kept freezing. I didn't want to risk it freezing and not being able to finish. I just figured I would take my chances on the last question because I felt that I was doing well on the rest of the exam. I know for a fact I got it wrong because I looked up the answer once I left the testing center.

This was already a rescheduled test due to Hurricane Irene, and I had to wait a month to reschedule it. On top of that, I'm about to move across the country in two weeks, so I don't have time to retake it. Now I'm really nervous that I wasn't doing as well as I thought and answering that last question incorrectly is going to hurt me. Of course, we have to be in a snail mail state, so I probably won't know until November. I am starting to be jealous of the days when you could knock it all out in 2 days without having to worry about computer malfunctions.

Now I'm nervous that when I go back to take REG that the computer will malfunction again. At least that will be at a different testing center, so maybe I won't have the same problems. I've never had problems at Greensboro before, but today has really rattled me and makes me leery about taking a test there again. I just feel that if they already had the problems on Saturday, they should have had them figured out by today. If they knew they weren't fixed, I wish they would have told me becauseI would have rather driven back home to Raleigh before I even started than start it only to be stuck on the last two questions.

You should report this now. You are required to report to NASBA or AICPA any problems at the testing center within 24 hours or they will ignore them. You should report it just in case it affects your score. You can't go back after the fact and report it. Learn from me.
