Reading Troubles!

I have always had trouble retaining information through reading. Once i get going, my thoughts get scrambled or the words start getting jumbled. I learn best visually or through mistakes so obviously watching lectures and doing MCQ’s really help. I was able to get through BEC w/o reading, but am worried this wont be the case with the other exams (studying REG now). Does anyone else have this trouble or any advice on how to better retain info while reading? Or do I just stick to the method that best suits the way i learn and skip reading?

I followed along in the book with Roger's lectures, but for REG, AUD and BEC, I never went back and “read” the books or took any notes beyond occasionally adding a couple words to the text.
I am also a visual learner, and this approach let me pass these three on the first try.

FAR is proving to be a bit different, as I am revisiting the Govt and NFP chapters since the topics are new to me. I made it through Roger's lectures in a month, and now I am finding the Ninja Plus videos to be a concise, effective and thorough review. There are many people here who successfully use the thorough reading and note-taking approach, but I have found the process tedious and not very engaging.

If you understand your learning style, you'll be able to study more efficiently and effectively. Do whatever works for you.

You said it, do what works. If you can't retain the reading, start writing or listening to the audio. Do what it takes to help you bring it back to mind when doing questions. Everybody have different learning styles, unfortunately, we second guess and spend a lot of time re-figuring out what we all ready know…..including me after all my crying, and anxiety. Do what works, get to those questions and learn from them….good luck, keep studying.

@jjjgolf500, I would say you should use the method that works best for you. Don't waste your time on something that does not add value.

I dumped Becker video lectures while studying for FAR. It took me 3 exams to realize that I do not have an auditory perception. Skipping lecture videos and using the textbook probably saved me around 40 hours of study time. I am retaining the information better and my visual memory allows me to recall JEs and schedules.

    Good luck!

I haven't cracked opened a book for any exam. Not sure how thorough Roger/Ninja multiple choice questions are but for Becker I just did the multiple choice questions over and over. I added lectures to AUD and REG but I don't think it'll be necessary to pass. My learning style is similar to yours. My friend always say, ” nobody reads the book for the cpa exams”. A lot of members here do but definitely not necessary to pass on first attempt if reading textbook doesnt work for you.
