NTS question

Apologies in advance if this offends anyone … It’s not meant to. I am just curious why I’ve seen so many posts and comments about people stressing over their NTS’s expiring. Am I missing something? I’ve always focused on one section at a time … Paid for the exam, received my NTS, scheduled my exam for a month or two later, studied, them took the exam.

An NTS lasts about 6 months …. Why would someone pay for the exam, receive their NTS, an then stress about it expiring? I understand some people pay for multiple exams at once, and receive the NTS for both parts, but I just find that inefficient and silly.

I may be way off track here, but was just curious about some valid reasons.

    Licensed Florida CPA:
    B: 71, 73, 79
    A: 83
    R: 78 (expired), 77
    F: 74, 74, 80

    It's finally freaking over.

I usually pay for at least 2 at a time because my state adds an additional $95 fee for each time you apply for the exam, but if you pay for more than one part you only have that $95 once. So I'm trying to save the $95 by paying for more than one section at a time there. That $95 does add up.

Clarissa is right on about the $95 fee— I definitely think that is a huge reason why people put multiple exams on one NTS. My first attempt at the CPA was back in 2006 when I was a recent grad. Back then, $95 was a huge deal so I put all four exams on one NTS. I passed the first (pre-busy season), and then failed the rest (during and post busy season). My confidence was shot and I ended up giving up on the CPA for 5 years.

I did three exams on one NTS this time around and was successful. It helped for me to already have paid for the exams— it lit a fire under my rear end to get the studying done.

Exactly, Clarissa. Indiana charges a $150 fee for each NTS, so I also pay for two sections at a time.

I also think first time applicants always think that its easy to breeze through the exams within a short time, I registered for two sessions on my initial application and it really ruined my studies and exam scores. Since then, I have learnt not to schedule an exam until I'm done going through my review course.

Some people don't have a lot of money to spend on the exam. Lucky for me, my NTS is for 9 months (yay California?) and I scheduled all 4 parts on one NTS hoping to save money.

I am a little worried to, because work is going to pick up in January and I am be unable to sit in February for my last part. I really hope I don't forfeit the exam fee and have to pay the reapplication fee as well.

    AUD - 7/5/13 - 93
    FAR - 8/24/13 - 91
    BEC - 11/30/13 - 92
    REG - 2/24/14 - 91! DONE!

California reapplication is 50 dollars so seems to be much cheaper than other states..;)

I would say Stoleway is actually right – most new candidates think they can do the exams in 6 months no problem so fall into the trap of paying for all the exams.

Good thing California has 9 months for their NTS. I have always done an NTS for two exams at a time. Hope this is the last time i have to apply for an NTS… who knows … Just have to keep working and trying

    FAR 05/27/14; 786/110 - Done !

Texas is different – 1 NTS per section

Guess every state is different – since it is a national exam, you would think ALL states would have same rules – weird!
