Hey guys,

My state requires me to obtain 3 signatures( 1 from a CPA) in order to sit for the exam. Problem is I am studying abroad and won’t be back in the states until the beginning of august and I planned to sit for the exam at the end of august. So, obtaining signatures would be kind of difficult for me until I get back, also I don’t really have any connections to CPAs. Just wanted to ask besides the CPA signature, does it matter who else signs for me? Is there any way to submit these signatures electronically? maybe I can get a previous professor to vouch for me. Anyone else have any problems obtaining signatures during their process? and will they not give me an NTS unless this form gets sent in?

I had to get 3 signatures for a moral character reference form. I'm a Louisiana candidate and it is required for all first time applicants of the CPA exam in Louisiana. I emailed the state board as I didn't have any connections to CPAs and I needed references for the form. They told me if I didn't know any CPAs, then doctors or lawyers can sign it. I got 3 doctors to sign my reference form and they accepted my exam application and my reference form that I submitted June 2nd. Got my NTS around June 9th or 10th. I don't know what state you are in but on the form I had to send in, there is a list of individuals who “can not” sign and former professors was one of them, as well as any blood relative, or current or former employee, which is why I had a hard time getting signatures. No, they will not give you an NTS until the reference form is submitted as it is a required part of the application process and determining if you are eligible to sit for the exam. As far as I know, you can submit the original form by mail. Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for your comment. I live in PA. I didn't know doctors would be able to substitute for a CPA, does that work in all states? where did you find that “list” of individuals that cannot sign for you?

He emailed his state board and told them about not having connections to CPA. They replied with the acceptable replacement people. Good luck!

I don't know about the reference form in PA, but the list is on the Louisiana form, it looks like this:

Also, I just looked at the form for PA and it does say 1 reference has to be a CPA. But I would think that 2 doctors or lawyers would be able to sign.
