Late

Has anyone arrived at Prometric after your scheduled time or at least not the full 30-minutes prior to your scheduled time?

Due to failure to plan ahead, I have to drive 2 hours to the test center, and although I’m going to give myself a half hour buffer, I’m curious to see what would happen if I were to be late…Murphy’s Law and all that.

    Thanks!

Besides the first exam (when I realized this) I have been a little late to every exam (no more than 10-15 minutes). Maybe it is just my location but it hasn't mattered up to this point.

I typically arrive at my test center about 5 minutes before my scheduled exam time since I always seem to underestimate the traffic in that area. For my first two exams no one said anything about my arrival time or indicated that it was a problem but for my last exam the person that checked me in informed me that I needed to be there at LEAST 30 minutes before my scheduled exam time and that they could technically prevent me from taking the exam. However, she still checked me in even though she grumbled about it, so I'm guessing that though they've been told we need to be there 30 minutes before exam time, they're not really pressed to enforce that so long as we're there within a reasonable amount of time.

Lol, the nearest testing center for me was a three hour drive and crossed a time zone, but I still always left six hours before hand because I am obsessive-compulsive about being late. Then I would stop at a Chick-fil-a (gotta love those required rituals), get a cup of coffee and study my final notes for an hour. Then panic that I wasn't properly calculating the time zone difference (one hour ahead) and head to the test center. Run inside to see what time their clock said. They always let me start the test early.

I suggest you leave extra early – you never can predict traffic issues.

    I asked about this once.

I was usually a bit early, and would just get admitted early once I went through the procedures (ID verification, putting stuff in locker, etc).

If you arrive late, according to one test center person I asked, they can technically refuse you and make you reschedule. As long as they have open slots when you arrive, they'll still let you in, but a grumpy test center employee could keep you out.

I had car issues with my last test. It was scheduled for 6pm, but I preferred not to take an evening test, so I called earlier in the day (like around 10am) and asked if they had openings if i were to come a couple hours early, and they said “sure”, so I left home in time to get there around 2-3 (I can't remember exactly). My drive is about 1 1/2 hours. So, I guess it would've been a little after noon that I left for my 6pm test. About 2 miles down the road my car was having major issues, so I turned around and called my boyfriend – who was getting ready to leave for work – and told him I needed to take his car, I could drop him off at work first or he could drive the grandparent's car or something. So, I switched cars, but he said his car would need new tires to make the trip to the testing center (we'd been meaning to get new tires, but just hadn't gotten there yet). So I drove to the place we usually get tires at, and for some reason they didn't have his size tires. So, after wasting about 20-30 minutes there waiting for service and for them to check, I drove to another place, and waited through line etc. to get the tires, then drove to the test center counting the minutes. I'd contacted the test center periodically throughout the day to let them know I wouldn't be early, and then to let them know I'd probably be late. My test center had the friendliest, kindest people of all the various test centers that I've been to for this exam and others, so I think they would've worked with me to the best of their ability, but they told me that if I was more than a 1/2 hour late the system wouldn't let the CPA exam launch. Once I got to the center, I didn't even take time to text or call my boyfriend and let him know I'd made it, cause I was right on the wire. The two staff worked together to get me processed and in ASAP, and I launched the exam at like 6:28 or 6:29. From what I gathered, it's the part when you type in your NTS/launch code that has to happen by 30 minutes past the appointment time. There were a lot of open seats at the test center and like I said, these test center employees are the most helpful, friendly ones I've dealt with, and they seemed very concerned for me as they were rushing me through the process, so I'm pretty sure that past 30 minutes late, they can't launch your exam regardless of whether they want to or not.

So, tl;dr version: If you're 30 minutes past appointment time by the time that you actually launch your test, I've been told that the test won't launch and they will have no choice but to turn you away.

I got harrassed once for only being 5-10 minutes “early”, but it was during a bloody snowstorm!!

We have a “little” center and there are never more than 3 of us in the waiting room, so things get going pretty quickly.

Having to having to put on new tires on the way to the CPA test? or else you won't get there?

    Some kind of symbolism?

Haha, no, old worn out tires that couldn't handle an hour on the interstate. 🙂

    @ Lila

Are you still interested in the CMA? The passing rate for CPAs and CPA candidates seems very high (based on the CMA thread).

    Has your job description/responsibility changed?

@M.O.D. Yes, still quite interested in it, but job title hasn't changed (though responsibilities should be more than sufficient IMO). I'm contemplating some different career options, though, which may affect my ability to get it…shoot me an email and I can fill you in, but don't want to post it publicly on an open forum till things are set in stone. I'm really hoping to get the CMA someday, though, because I've become quite attached to the idea of being Lilla, CPA, CMA. 😉

I've seen some amazing exam stories here on A71.

    These are top:

Lilla having to replace all of her tires on the way to the exam.

MLA having to leave halfway through the exam, because she had to get back to work.

Running out of the exam room to throw-up. (I forgot who, a moderator…)

Haha. Glad I made your list. Having to replace the tires last-minute would've ruined me if I had been planning to test at my actual appointment time and it really shook me up to almost miss my test – to know that one slow car or one traffic jam could mean that I wait another month to take my last exam.

I just saw someone else's thread about having a power outage during the last MCQs – that would make my list too!

I was half an hour late once and totally stressed. My son had forgotten something… I had to take it to him. I think it was his lunch. Then I had no gas… It was like one thing after the next. The Prometrics people were nice about it. I think I might have been like 15 minutes late, but there was a huge line of people…
