Is there a time-limit between tests for candidates? - Page 3

I tried to find it on the Texas Board of Public Accountancy site, but no luck. I am pretty sure I sat for my last test at the very end of 2012. So, I’m wondering, is there a certain amount of time in which I must schedule and take my next test? It seems like a buddy of mine told me a long while back that you must test at least once before 2 years since your last test date. Can someone please help me out with what the official rule is on this?

    Thanks in advance!

@Carne, the statement that was incorrect is this statement “Each passing score is NOT good for 18 months.”

Because absolutely every passing score is good for 18 months, without exception.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

@mla, this is just being nit-picky or misunderstanding of what was trying to be said. I understood what Mary was trying to say, even if her first statement wasn't absolutely, exactly, 100% correct. For example, it doesn't matter if your 3rd passed section is good for 18 months, if you only have one more month until your first section expires.

LOL, of course it matters if your 3rd passed section is good for 18 months when your first expires next month. Its the difference between having to retake one passed exam and having to retake three passed exams.

I just want folks who are new here to get completely accurate information. I'm not here because I am trying to pass this exam, that's old news for me. I'm here to help people who are on the journey.

    Mary-

I actually work in what is considered a more stressful segment of public- litigation consulting. It's really high stakes work and generally has extremely tight time frames. Also, the work product had better be 100% correct when shipped. Oftentimes, there is no turning back. A keying error or miscalculation can destroy one's credibility in front of the judge or jury and could get a practitioner “Dalhberted” (in layman terms, it means you're blacklisted and will NEVER get hired again).

I've just never been the type to worry about things. Stress only clouds the mind and gets in the way of actually addressing what needs to be done. Just give every engagement 100% and let the cards lay where they fall.

My suggested cure for stress is:

    1) high intensity exercise,

    2) taking on a relaxing hobby or creative outlet, or

    3) move to Colorado and take up its newest legal hobby.

    Taxgeek-

Pennsylvania def has the end of the month expiration. New Jersey may as well.

    Mary-

Thanks good luck to you as well. I'll nail it this time. I'm sure you'll get it too.

I didn't really prepare the first two times. The first time I took it the day after AUD and didn't study at all. I wanted to know what to expect. The second time I convinced myself that I could study for a week our two and pass because I only missed it by two points when I didn't study. Turns out I just got lucky on the first test.

It's all good. I'm busting out the green visor and arm garter for this go-around. FAR is toast.

Three you go! I am looking forward to having more time to spend towards FAR now. I have been really limited on time with the 10-15 deadline yesterday. So glad it's passed! I can hardly wait until this is over so that I can have more time. I have a special needs son and other children who need my time and attention!

Ah well … back to work and onward.

NY gives you until the end of the window as I've seen here anecdotally. I don't know if there are others. Maybe not.

I double-checked on the NY CPA board website to make sure I remembered the state correctly. It is interesting how they phrase it:

70.4(c)(1) “Credit for any section passed shall not be valid for more than 18 months, calculated from the last day of the examination window in which the candidate sat for such section of the examination. A candidate must pass all four sections of the examination within a rolling 18-month period, which begins on the last day of the examination window in which the candidate sat for any section of the examination that the candidate passed.”

    from https://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/cpa/part70.htm#exam

I found a 2007 article that explains the reason for the change, which doesn't really make sense to me:

    https://www.nysscpa.org/printversions/tp/507a/article2.htm

Now the exam score expires in a month they can't test. Before, that wouldn't have been possible, unless the dark months were different than they are now.

    AUD 84 (1/9/14-Wiley books/TB + free materials)
FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)
    BEC 76 (10/5/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC)

That's interesting! I'm understanding that they wanted to make the process more fair for candidates whose scores would have expired in the middle/end of a dark month, technically only giving them 17 months instead of 18. I might be wrong though.

I did find it interesting, however, that the board felt the need to extend the window because “the examination provider” (who I'm assuming is the AICPA in this case) couldn't get scores out fast enough for candidates to plan their testing schedules. Argument for automatic scoring? πŸ˜‰

@Bill – Not sure about moving to Pennsylvania or New Jersey. I'm good with the cold, but 25* over there feels a lot colder than 25* in Montana…. And I'd miss the mountains. πŸ™‚

    taxgeek-

I don't blame you. The Rockies are beautiful. I hear the trout fishing is good too. I've always wanted to sneak out there to go snowboarding and trout fishing, but generally end up settling on Vermont each winter (a 4-5 hr drive).

Regarding the cold- I live near the Jersey Shore and it gets pretty cold here. Generally speaking, the colder it gets, the windier it gets. If the weather is approaching 10 deg F, you can pretty much count on the wind gusting over 50 mph and the bay freezing over. I've been to Canada, VT, Maine and still haven't been as cold as at the shore when and if the bay freezes (it normally doesn't).

taxgeek, Yes, but a testing month plus exactly 18 months equals another testing month. It *can't* fall in a dark month. That's why it doesn't make sense to me.

That is unfair, IMO. My BEC expires September 30, 2015, in a month I can't test. If I am not close to being done, I can't even test in that month to finish so that I don't end up having to retake it.

    @ bedhead – ROFL. I'm guessing not.
