If you want to move your exam sooner, no reschedule fee should apply

Who is with me on this? I originally scheduled my exam for Tuesday 8/6 a month ago. I feel ready and want to take it on Monday 8/5 but paying $88 is ridiculous for a reschedule fee. I think the policy should be changed where if you move your exam time to a sooner date, there should be no reschedule fee.

It's a business, pure and simple. If businesses did what was in the best interest of their patrons instead of themselves they'd rarely be profitable. Like gyms that cash in on one year contracts knowing full well most stop going after 60 days 🙂

I read somewhere that the CPA exam was split into four parts not for the convenience of the test takers, but for increased profitability.

It's a shame, but education (and subsequent certifications) are operated as a business. Thus, they look for profit anywhere they can get it.

What better place than professionals who will be affluent enough to drop the big bucks on a trio of letters next to our name, though many of us don't have this income while taking exams.

Prometric is a monopoly for all practical purposes. If someone was so inclined, opening a proctored testing facility for use not only by NASBA, but state certification for all professional license tests is the way to go. We think everyone in there is a CPA candidate but just think of all of the organizations that use Prometric!

Interesting… I did not know that tid bit about switching over to 4 exams for more revenue. Does anybody know what the exam fee was to take the CPA while it was the all in one shot ordeal?

I don't know what the raw cost was, but I think the revenue difference comes via retakes.

The old exam was offered 2x a year in Nov and May. A person could only take it twice.

Now, the test is offered in four windows. So each test can potentially be taken 4x a year. (4 tests 4x a year = 16 tests)

Also, the old pass rate was about 30%. So.. 70% of people, statistically, retook at least once.

Now the pass rates are hovering around 45% for all 4 tests… So the odds of passing all 4 on the first shot are .45^4 or about 4%. That means 96% of people retake at least one test (again, statistically speaking).

70% retakes is less money than 96% retakes…

I know realistically these numbers are not quite “right” because I am oversimplifying some stuff. But I think one can get the jist.

And heck, I'm not even going to delve into the psychology of taking a huge test vs several “small” ones. If I was going to do that, I might point out the odds of someone winging a test that is offered only twice a year would be much less than one you can retake in a month.

Good to know none of us will ever be working with people like these… people obsessing over the bottom line over the morale thing to do….

There is a fee for everything, every step of the way, that's just how it is. They have a captive audience. Why should there be any fee to reschedule? How hard is it? It's all done electronically.

Don't know if every state is like this but I paid $250 to the California Board of Accountancy to process my license application. You might think, as I did, that would include actually sending the license. But no. That was another $60.

I changed my AUD exam to a week earlier than originally scheduled and of course there was a fee, I think $35. $88 is outrageous.

    kmaahs, interesting analysis.
