150 credit hours

I just graduated with 127 credit hours in an accounting degree. I am now currently sitting for the CPA exam. I was wanting to get some advice on how to get the remaining 23 credit hours to have the 150 hours to be licensed. I was considering enrolling in an MBA program, but I don’t see the point in paying the money or taking double the amount of hours just to get the remaining hours I need. Should I just take 8 random classes to fulfill the requirement? Any suggestions?

How are you sitting for the exam with only 127 hours? I had to have all 150 before I could sit and I think that is the way it is with most states. Does your state board allow you to sit without the full 150?

My advice would depend on whether you ever plan on getting your masters. If you plan on getting your masters sometime down the road, I would do it now and then you can use those hours to fulfill the requirements. If you don't plan on getting it then I would probably just take 8 random classes (something your interested in would probably make it more fun).

I personally got all 150 while doing my undergraduate work by doing a double major. In fact, to get to 150, I studied and passed a CLEP test over my last Christmas break to get to the requirement (I was going to be 2 credits short). CLEP tests can be a good easy way to get credits too in addition to classes.

Not all states require 150 credits. You only need 120 in some states.

    Becker CPA

    AUD 81 5/29/12
    BEC 86 7/10/12
    REG 81 10/17/12
    FAR 02/12/13

Yes, WV only requires 120 hours to cit for the exam but 150 to be licensed. Thanks for the advice, I am not sure if an MBA would really benefit me if I am already a CPA. If I don't do an MBA now, I don't think I will ever do it down the road. I am just trying to figure out if a masters degree would benefit me right now and in the long run.

I was missing a few semester hours for being licensed under the 150 hour rule, but was able to take the exams. I had already graduated from undergrad school, so I figured if I need to take another course or two, I may as well go for a Master's degree that's 30 credits (10 courses). I have seen people here going for M.S. in Accounting and M.S. in Tax. I am going for a M.S. in Tax and feel that it will benefit me whether I continue to work in tax in a larger accounting firm, or if I decide to teach on the college level (which I would like to do). I also know that if I don't do this now, I may not have another opportunity, or as (relatively) easy an opportunity, to do it later on. These were/are my main reasons for going for a M.S. in Tax. You need to see what would be your reasons for or against getting a graduate degree…and if perhaps a Master's degree would make more sense for you as opposed to an MBA…

^^I agree. If you have to pick up 8 classes, might as well stay to pick up 10-12 and get a Masters on your resume. Preferably a Masters of Accounting, but they do have some accelerated 1-year MBA programs out there as well.

    REG - Passed!!
    BEC - Passed
    FAR - Passed
    AUD - Passed

    Study Materials: Becker basic course
