I’ve been reviewing the released writing sections and have been kinda confused. One of the questions released was on Pension Plans. On the writing simulations is it possible that the writing can be from any section of the CPA exams? Also do they grade more on technical writing and relevance or does the answer have to be 100% correct and contain proficient technical writing?

    AUD- 53, 60, 76
    FAR- 72, 60, 78 (Lose credit FEB 2014)
    REG- 86
    BEC- 8/6/13

The “correctness” of your answer is 100% irrelevant.

Thanks. The writing part of this section is making me nervous because I am not really 100% sure how to get about maximizing my points.

Disclosure whoever told me BEC was the easiest of the 4 sections lied.

Focus on your plan how to formulate your answers, don't get caught up in the content. Good essays will help your score though, so don't just disregard them unless you know your mcq perfectly. I score weak in MCQ and strong in WC and passed BEC. Good luck!~

I've focused on how I know I want to start my writing and close it. I've been a tax accountant for 6 yrs and done tons of letters/memos/etc to clients but it's all been tax related. I hope this experience helps me in the writing section. This is my last part and I hope and pray I pass it next Tuesday. I am expecting in Jan so I'd really like to be done with these exams….no pressure.

Wait a second…. The “correctness” is irrelevant? I'm confused… What are they grading us on then? So We can just BS our way through the answer as long as the sentence structure and grammar are good?

    #427580

@cournae – yes and no. They want to see that you can formulate a memo, make a point and yes have correct grammar/sentence structure along the way. A lot of times the memo prompt is vague, and other times very detailed. I think they really want to see if you can pull your thoughts together and present it completely, whether or not you are on the mark with the subject itself.

Focus on structure, format, grammer. I wasn't 100% confident on the content or accuracy of my answers, but I made sure whatever I wrote was written well and organized. I did not practice any, I just went through the Becker lecture on how to approach them and applied on exam day. I used the wording from the original information provided to help structure my responses and to make sure I addressed the necessary points. If you get stuck on the topic, just try to make whatever you “don't know” sound good!

It was enough for me to pass!

    AUD - 90 Pass
REG - 70,61,81 Pass DONE DONE DOOOOONNEEE!!!!!!!!
    BEC - 79 - Pass
    FAR - 70,82 - Pass

@cournae – from what I've gathered, the content is not that important. In fact several review courses indicate that it doesn't matter if your content is correct at all, just as long as you have proper grammar and your essay flows logically from point to point. The exception here is if they're graded by a human, which only happens when your MCQs put you somewhere in the 73 – 77 range I believe. In that case I think the content does matter, but I could be wrong.

@Victoria – I think the essays can come from material not included in BEC. Some people on this board assume that these are the pretest question, although they wouldn't include them as pretest questions in the first place if they didn't intend to score them on future exams, so I don't think that reasoning makes any sense.

thank you both- great advice! I had absolutely no idea that content didn't matter. I feel like a 100lb. weight has just been lifted off my shoulders now!

When I took BEC I had a WC topic that I had not seen in my review and had a strong correlation to a completely different exam section that I had not taken yet. I don't play around with disclosure but I can say it required critical thinking and seemed subjective…so I made something up that seemed logical and coherent! That memo was a work of pure fiction (confirmed at home my response was so off base that it made me laugh) but it was a well written work of fiction nonetheless! I ended up with a 76 and didn't end up on the BEC bubble. I was so relieved!

While I agree and have personal evidence that content is not the driver of your WC score…it does make it far less stressful when you know the material!
