It's not. It seems like a fairly large chunk of the people studying for these exams try to memorize the content instead of trying to get a working understanding of the material. If you understand it, these things all make sense.

    REG - 90 (08/2014) - Study Time = 6 days
    FAR - 89 (10/2014) - Study Time = 9 days
    BEC - 83 (11/2014) - Study Time = 4 days
    AUD - 89 (01/2015) - Study Time = 2 days

    Final score released - 2/4/15
    Application mailed - 2/5/15
    Licensed CPA - 2/12/15

I disagree. In my opinion the thing that makes COSO hard is that you need to memorize a bunch of material. There is little logic to it. I used flash cards on the more heavily tested COSO material, and left it at that. COSO is just a bunch of unrelated jibberish you have to memorize to get through your exam. Also most of us never learned it in school which also makes it harder to learn for the exam.

I think people stress it, because you don't want to leave points on the table and it is really just rote memorization.

    Took final exam 2/25/15.
    Sent in Application 3/12/15.

I think a lot of people include Governance when they say COSO.

With Governance and COSO my advice is to focus on the following:

CRIME (Particular emphasis on Control Environment and Monitoring)

Board of Directors and their responsibilities

    Financial Experts

    CEO/CFO roles and responsibilities.

None of it is really difficult. It's one of those things you review once or twice and you should have a pretty good grasp of the material.

If that is really the amount of time you took to pass those exams, we are not allowed to be friends..ever

Some people find it difficult to distinguish which element of COSO a certain control relates to. It's not memorization as much as it is being able to understand how to figure out how things fit into a framework, especially when a lot of things seem very similar.

Spend time practicing questions and trying to understand patterns. If you feel you are guessing too often (and guessing incorrectly), then try to find another resource or someone who can explain it differently. Memorizing makes it difficult, although there are some base cases that you should probably have “memorized”… common example(s) of each element.

It's just rote memorization for the most part. It's boring to study for. But I don't think I see too much of the COSO stuff on the exam.

@mt3130, apart from being extremely bright, you must have been able to find a logical pattern to all these parts of the exam. Either that or you are not that bright, but your memory is close to perfect. Im kidding about the memory part. You should quit whatever it is that you are doing right now, and write a book about how to pass this exam the smart way. I never seen someone passing all 4 parts in 3 weeks, and specially not with those scores.
