I printed out a list of BEC formulas that was graciously brought to my attention by golfball … but now I am wondering how on earth to memorize the 5 pages of formulas?!

I am thinking that I will re-write them every day, I seen that one person suggested that that may help.

I have not started studying the BEC material in the technical sense. I am attending live lectures and plan to start with the materials next week. I just thought that I can get a head start on these formulas since I have been told that approximately 60 out of the 72 multiple choice will probably require some level of calculation!

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

flashcards! I wrote them all on flashcards and kept them in my car/study bag

I will try the flashcards … but my brain seriously turns to off when I start looking at them! lol. I find them completely adverse.

I am also thinking that using them within the context of the questions will help a bit. 100s of random formulas are pretty abstract.

I only memorized the ones that I seen in the MCQ's – IE variances and ratios. I had about 50 flashcards.

Sometimes, I had to pace around the room and talk myself through them.

Print out few copies, look at them everyday in print and on your phone (use dropbox to upload the file). A week prior to the exam, write the whole thing once a day. That was my secret to passing BEC. Good luck!

I agree with what everyone has said so far. For the finance ratios, I wrote them over and over until I had them down, especially some of the trickier ones (extended DuPont equation, etc). Writing them myself is what helped me remember… I've realized that flashcards don't work as well for me with the way I learn.

It also helped me to think about each ratio and what it was trying to get at, because that will hopefully give you a clue as to what the inputs could be. It might also help to think about how the formulas relate to one another, as the examiners might throw something in there that makes you manipulate one formula to get an input for another formula, etc.

For cost variances, I just had to write them over and over to memorize them. If I saw a question on the exam that asked for a certain type of variance, I would immediately write down the formula I memorized on my laminated scratch paper thing and then start filling in the variables from there. It helped me keep things straight.

On exam day I was definitely glad that I'd practiced writing them down so much. 🙂 Good luck on your exam!

I use flashcards, Ninja notes and I made my own audio. Everytime I'm at the gym or driving, I'm listening to the material. Btw, 60/72 seems really high. I just took it in May and MCQs requirering calculation were much less than that. I guess it depends on what the computer throws at you.

I took the exam a couple of weeks ago and studied for about 3-4 weeks — Like you, I was afraid of the formula situation. I made my own flashcards as I went through each chapter and reviewed them as I went through the homework. Make a list on a sheet of paper or notecards, it's up to you. I had a ton of calculations on my test — going through TONS of practice mcq's and re-writing the formulas from memory will help you to remember them on exam day, I guarantee it. I was surprised by how many formulas I was able to recall.

NON-STOP MCQs and they will stick …don't worry! Main formulas to know in and out BEP, ROI and ROA ratios, all turnover ratios, WACC, EVA, EQO, variances mnemonics. BEP formula will help to figure out other equations as necessary. Becker's PURE DADS mnemonic for variances A MUST!

@nika The PURE DADS mnemonic saved me!!!!

To anyone reading this and is studying BEC with Becker: make sure you KNOW that mnemonic — I had quite a few variance analysis questions on my exam and happened to score Stronger for that particular section on my score report.

Get out some paper and just write out every formula you can remember by memory.

Then later do it again.

And again.

Eventually you'll just remember everything that way, or at least the important ones.
