Transaction Processing/Data Processing Cycle Distinction

Becker says that the five steps of processing are “collect, process, store, transform, and distribute.” It later says that “transaction processes are generally divided into the following four functional areas that make up the data processing cycle: data input, data storage, data processing, and information output.” Is this basically saying the same thing?

The reason I ask is that this question kinda threw me for a loop:

The process of capturing data and ultimately producing information output is referred to as:

    a. Transaction controls

    b. Transaction processing

    c. Information and communication

    d. Data processing

I guessed d., but the answer is b. D. is incorrect because “the processing of data is part of transaction processing.” I had guessed d. because I was thinking of the data processing cycle, but I guess d. is only referring to the specific step of data processing, not the entire cycle?

I’m really confused. What’s the difference between transaction processing, the data processing cycle, and data processing?

    Thanks!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the transaction process is from beginning to end; customer order of merchandise to deposit of customer payment. The data processing cycle is entering the order in the system (either computer or pencil and paper), classifying it, storing it and creating reports. Data processing is classifying the information. I don't have an auditing book anymore to check my answer.

    Thanks for the response, Kricket!

Reviewing the materials, stepping back, and looking at the big picture, I'm thinking about it as transaction processing is just a subsystem of the entire Business Information System, and the data processing cycle takes place in each subsystem (TPS, DSS, EIS, etc.). “Data input, data storage, data processing, and information output” is the same as “Collect, process, store, transform, and distribute,” just worded differently. Data processing would then be a step within the data processing cycle, and thus within each subsystem. (Note: what I just said is me trying to reason out the definitions. It may not be correct. Actually, it probably isn't correct.)

But this still doesn't explain why the answer is b., not d. Am I headed even more in the wrong direction? Can someone verify Kricket's response? (This is BEC, btw…although this may also be covered in AUD. Haven't taken that yet.)

I'm struggling on the same problem. I'm a little confused as to whether transaction processing and data processing are separate or if data processing is a part of transaction processing. Any ideas?
