JCampMemberI am studying BEC using the Becker Review and thought it may be helpful if a few of us studied the same material at the same time. My thoughts were that we could help each other understand some of the material that is hard to grasp. One person may have a good understanding of something and may be able to explain it to the rest of us. This is the first time I have studied for the CPA exam. I am about to start chapter 3 and have I have read and worked chapters one and two.
If you are interested are have another suggestion please post.

iPassMemberI guess I'm not the only one slacking off 😉 well the reason for that is I haven't received a notice of schedule yet and don't have a specific target date. Just going over the material before my live classes start in mid July… In any case, working on chapter 3 right now, feel pretty good with time value of money and so far discounted cash flows make sense to me.
As to the chapter 2, I feel the most comfortable with it. Luckily I had the best economics professor in school, so please feel to post your questions on chapter 2.
@anshu shah,
since those who use Becker 2011 spent around $3K on the review course, I doubt ppl will be willing to share their materials. However there are many other helpful and less expensive sources available out there. Check out other posts on this forum to see how people manage to pass with previous years' materials and where they get updates from.
For now please review the latest CSOs/SSOs outline:
You'll see the content of the 2011 exam, this should help you to understand the difference between the old exam and the new one, and I'm sure you can find the material to study and prepare in order to pass BEC this time.

JCampMemberI enjoyed my few days off from studying. I just finished the HW on chapter 2. I didn't really have any problems with questions. I just need to go back over flash cards. I will start chapter 3 tomorrow. What chapter is everyone else on?
Thanks

JCampMemberiPass, what chapter are you on?

tnyfn20Participant@Jcamp I thought that Chapter 4 was pretty straight forward and simple to understand. If you are not around computers often it might be a little challenging.

AnonymousInactiveHi All,
BEC is my last part to pass, I take it July 5th (only a few days from today). Im currently a nervous wreck and trying my best to think positive that I can do this. Anywho, I finished going thru all the chapers and questions, but for B5 (Becker), i was doign so well on the MCQ, scoring around 80% until I got to the questions for Standard variances. Im totally confused on all of this. The book doesnt go into great detail, the questions are all over the place and when it comes to calculating VOH and FOH variances I just dont know what to do or when to use actual hours vs standard vs applied hours. Any helpful tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks and goodluck to you all!

packerfan9204ParticipantHi All,
I'm glad I found this study group online! I've tried to find others at work to study with but they are all at different places with the exam. I'm doing the MCQs for BEC B3. I'm using Becker and it seems like the examples they use in the textbook are simplified compared to the MCQs at the end of the chapter.
I've been out of college for quite awhile and I decided I want to go back and get my license. It's been tough trying to juggle work and study (yes, even on the July 4th holiday like many of you). I'm sitting for BEC 8/23/11.
Is anyone using Becker? I have some questions regarding Financial valuation formulas.
Thanks and good luck to you all,

JCampMemberHey packerfan9204, glad you found us. I have also been out of school for a while and have decided to take the exam. I am using Becker to study. I totally agree with you about the MCQ, they do seem harder than the examples at the end of the chapters.
Feel free to post any questions you are having problems with. I am sure someone will help. I am in section 3 of chapter 3. I finding it a little easier to listen to the lecture then go back and outline the chapter, it is very time consuming but helps me a lot. I plan on starting the HW on section 3 today. I am sure I will have a few questions.

iPassMemberI am also in section 3 of chapter 3. Planning on finishing chapter 3 today (took a little vacation but back on track now).
I also find the HW questions harder than the examples in the book, but I hope this will get us all prepared for the actual exam.

JCampMemberI will not be able to start the HW in 3/3 today but will first thing in the morning. I think there is 80 questions?

mailtogauravParticipantCan someone help me with this question from chapter 2 becker
Securing co-operation amongst emerging nations to limit the emission of green house gases can be made more difficult because of :
1) Lack of Functional Interdependence
2) Lack of Systematic Interdependence
The answer says ‘Functional' but why ?
Systematic Interdependence is related to stuff like climate and global warming and Functional is more to do with IMF, WTO & UN
Can somebody please clarify

obie813ParticipantHey guys… Trying to study for BEC but getting crushed with hours at work for Q2. I been through the book one time, but that was a few weeks back since I had to push the test back till mid july do to personal issues that arose. Anyway, considering that Im pressed for time I was hoping that someone could point out the chapters that I should focus most heavily on. I was guessing 2,3,5? But please let me know your input. Thanks so much in advance.

iPassMember@mailtogaurav:
This question is a bit confusing…
You are right about systemic interdependence, it does in fact deal with global warming and other issues affecting all countries on our planet which are all members of one system. Functional interdependence, on the other hand, is basically cooperation between nations. This particular question is asking what would make cooperation amongst emerging countries more difficult. Well, if there is no common effort between them – no functional interdependence – then it's difficult for them to cooperate and achieve common goal (in this case it will be hard for them to limit the emissions of greenhouse gasses).
Try to go over Becker's explanation of the correct answer again, you'll see that it basically has the same idea. In plain English it states the following:
When developed nations fail to involve emerging nations into world-wide institutions (such as UN, WTO, IMF, etc.) then it will be hard to cooperate and limit the emissions of greenhouse gasses. Lack of cooperation is caused by lack of genuine functional interdependence.
Hope this will help.

packerfan9204ParticipantI'm sitting for BEC on 08/23/11. I've covered all the material and lectures using Becker CPA Review. I've taken 3 100 MCQs exams. It tests all 5 sections of BEC. I scored 76, 64, and 64. The exam results do specify how I did on each section so I can work on my weaker areas.
I'm having difficulty understanding the manufacturing overhead variances: spending, efficiency, and volume variances. I have trouble with the MCQs and get lost in the all the data the Qs provide. The formulas Becker provides are not clear. Does anyone have this same issue? Does anyone feel strong in this area and willing to help out a fellow CPA candidate?
I'm concerned about having to write 3 simulations each in 15 minutes or less. Any suggestions on the simulations?
Thank you and good luck in your exam preparation!
