Recommendations for studying for BEC written communication?

    Hi everyone,

So I have about a week left until BEC and I feel pretty comfortable with the material. Got about 87% on a practice exam last night. I think I’m gonna make flashcards for IT and keep working MCQs to keep everything fresh in my head, but I’m not too worried overall.

Only thing is, I have no way to gauge how I’m doing on the written communication. I know I’m a decent writer with solid grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc., but there’s no way for me to know if I’m organizing my thoughts the way the exam graders want me to. Any thoughts on how better to prep for this portion of the exam?

I'd give you a pass for this topic alone. You seem like you write well enough!

I think the consensus is, focus more on your writing style and technique and less on the subject matter. Keep things clear and concise. If you have any small to moderate amount of writing little business memos or even emails to management/bosses in your place or work, that is probably going to give you a good base of writing skills to score well on the written stuff. Good luck! It sounds like you're ready (to pass!)

    REG - 65, 70, 80!
    BEC - 35, 62, 79!
    AUD - 73, 75!
    FAR - 65, 73, 70, 75! DONE.

Thanks, nbad311! The vote of confidence is much appreciated 🙂 Congrats on passing FAR and the whole CPA Exam, btw!

Clear and concise, I can do. And I know that the focus will be more on the writing than on the subject matter itself. I guess what I'm really wondering is whether these memos are supposed to be 5-paragraph page-long type essays like I remember from high school standardized tests or should they be shorter and closer to 3 paragraphs? I'm also wondering how many details and examples the graders will expect. Does anyone have any guidance on this?

Becker's advice is to be sure to throw the facts of the question back at them in the response.

    Reg - Passed 82 Nov 2012 - Becker
    Aud - Passed 86 May 2013 - Becker
    BEC - Passed 88 Aug 2013 - Becker
