jeffKeymasterPer the trusty ol' NINJA Book (BEC):
Field checks, to test whether characters are the proper type. A field check on a numerical field would indicate an
error if it contains blanks or alphabetic characters.
Validity checks, or existence checks, to compare ID numbers or transaction codes to those stored in the system.
When vendor 12612 is entered, the computer locates that vendor in its database to confirm that vendor is valid.

jas22MemberHey everyone, I'm having trouble with budget and overhead variance analysis. Does anyone have any good insight they can give me? I'm using Becker, but I'm just not understanding it. Any tips would be great. Thanks!

MrsBingMemberJust finished the first becker progress exam and scored the following:
20/24 83%
17/24 71%
21/24 87%
I did a lot better than I thought. About 15% of the questions were questions I already seen before on Becker so that sucked. I spent about a half hour longer than I would have liked on the MCQ's, so I need to make sure to speed up.

Determined CPAParticipantjas22 – I set up the material and labor variances the same way every time (PURE ASAS)
P=AQ(SP-AP); AQ=Actual quantity purchased
U=SP(SQ-AQ) AQ=Actual quantity used; SQ=Actual output * Std per unit
R=AH(SR-AR)
E=SR(SH-AH)
Im usually able to get those questions correct based on that.
Then for the tormentors: Spending, Efficiency and Volume Variances
I have re-written these formulas more times than I've written my name.
Actual OH – usually given in problem
Budget OH amount based on actual DLH worked = Budgeted FOH + (Actual DLH worked * Std VOH rate/DLH)
Budget OH amount based on std DLH allowed = Budged FOH + (Std DLH allowed * std VOH rate/DLH)
OH Applied = (Std OH rate/DLH)*std DLH allowed
I don't know if you have the ninja notes or audio but Jeff emphasizes that variable OH is based on ACTUAL activity and fixed OH is based on NORMAL activity. I must say that to myself 50 times a day when reviewing these problems and I found that has helped. I suggest re-writing the formulas over and over.

Determined CPAParticipantThat's awesome, MrsBing! I'm taking the first one tomorrow morning. Did you/are you going to take the second one? I took it and it was awful. Don't do it to yourself.

MrsBingMemberSince everyone is saying how awful it is I may skip the second one. I don't want to depress myself. I think during the next 2 days I'm just going to do as many Ninja MCQs as possible and spend a few hours reading up on how to handle the WCs.
