hello,

i’m taking BEC for the first time on monday and i was wondering if people who have passed it could offer advice the length of their written responses. i assumed that they were relatively short (total of maybe 10-20 sentences over an appropriate number of paragraphs depending on topic), but CPA excel shitted on my practice tries and their “correct” responses were the length of novels. is it really necessary to write an 8 paragraph reply or is their advice terrible?

follow up complaint/clarification: the language used is pretty casual and the explanations are so much longer than they need to be; in the business world, these letter writers would be fired. …..but for purposes of the exam, is it 8 paragraphs or 3?

I think you are right in questioning their advice…Becker lecture said Intro with thesis, 1-2 explanatory paragraphs and Conclusion. That's it…no novels. Some of the Becker answers were pretty wordy, but I just don't think that is advantageous…read what they want carefully and formulate a business appropriate response. No bullet points, more a memo format.

Clear and concise responses beat long wordy ones any day.

thank you for passing that along. I'd trust becker's advice over low-budget CPA excel any day… so that's heartening to know.
