I was wondering if you could give me some encouragement/advice.

I am quite sure you have used Wiley for your test prep. I am using Wiley for BEC. For AUD, I used NIU CPA Review, which was awesome, but because of financial reasons, I went with Wiley because I could check it out at my library for free:-)

I am so overwhelmed with the amount of material in Wiley for some reason! I can’t seem to find a good way to study with Wiley for BEC. The questions are brutal and by the time I am done with them, I can’t remember how to solve them. It’s a vicious cycle for me.

If you don’t mind, can you give me some advise on how to study with Wiley for BEC. I am okay with Corporate Governance, IT, and Economics, it’s the rest that I am going nuts over.

    Thank so much!

    Hey,

I can't write much right now, but wanted to let you know that I'd “found” this thread and will reply more tomorrow! I have used Wiley for everything so far, so hopefully I'll be able to help you out. 🙂

    More tomorrow!

    Hey @CPAsweetness,

I can't tell you how you will study best, since it varies from person to person, but what I can tell you is how I studied and hope that you can draw some good tidbits from that. 🙂 BEC is the shortest Wiley book, but BEC has the most varied material, so it's an odd one to wrap your mind around all at once.

My study method was always to read the book first. On my first read-through, I wouldn't do any problems, just simply read. If I remember right, BEC was about 15-20 hours of reading time. After that, I would start working in Wiley Test Bank. I'm assuming that you've chosen not to purchase the test bank, and that's fine…but to replicate the experience, I would suggest doing one problem out of each chapter, and checking the answer immediately after – so first practice-problem-run, I'd do #1 in each chapter, and after doing #1 in Chapter 1, I'd check the answer, understand why I got it right or wrong, and then proceed to #1 in Chapter 2, rinse and repeat till I'd gotten through all the chapters. In WTB, I always did practice problem sets that pulled from all topics and provided the answers immediately afterward, so I think this is likely a good replication of that with the book. If you did that till you had gotten through all the problems in the book, I think you'd find that everything was fitting together much better! For me, the content always seemed overwhelming until I started doing problems.

If after a few problem-sets, you decide that, say, Chapter 3 is a weak area, I'd suggest going back and re-reading that chapter to try to cement your weak areas. If there's a topic that is unclear, don't be afraid to Google! Investopedia has solved a few problems for me. 😉

Overall, I think the best study-tip I can give you is to read the whole thing before you start worrying about understanding it. I know that seems weird, but getting the “big picture” helps to make the details make sense.

The other thing that helped me quite a bit for BEC was NINJA Audio. If you were going to buy one resource for this exam, I'd recommend WTB before NINJA Audio, but I do feel like the Audio was quite useful for this one. I didn't feel like I benefitted from it as much for the other exams (AUD, FAR, and REG), but it helped to create a mental “map” of the information in BEC. I think this benefit could be duplicated by taking outline-style notes from the chapters – like aim for 2 pages max of notes per chapter to get a birds-eye view of the material, then read or re-write those notes to help get the birds-eye in your mind, just to create some structure and organization to help your mind out.

    Hope this helps! 🙂

    Hi, Lilla!

I so appreciate you taking the time to post that for me.

After reading your post and thinking a while, I think I will start over fresh with the book. I will take your advise and read the whole book in a swoop. Then go back and do the questions the way you suggested. I love that idea. I think I get so focused on just one part that I get overwhelmed and bored! I feel that I suffer from ADD when it comes to BEC! I can find so many other *things* to do while I am studying.

Shortly, after the above, I am going to invest in either WTB, Ninja Notes, or Ninja Audio. I am leaning more towards the audio, because I feel that the Wiley book is a good source of problems to work for practice.

I plan on taking this part the first week of December. I believe this will be enough time for me to get my act together, study, and pass!

Thanks again! You are a live saver and appreciated.

Need some clarification on your approach using the WTB. You said you test yourself on question one of each chapter eg question number 1 of Chapter 1 then question 2 of chapter 2 then…… till you finish the question 1 of all chapters before you move to question 2 for chapter 1 then ……. How do you do this in WTB as when you select all chapters in WTB and say limit the test to 20 in practice mode how then do you choose question 1 of each chapter ,I just purchase the WTB and want to use your approach since you have achieve good results with it. I am taking AUD .

@Lilla, I just saw that you passed your last test – Congratulations!

I'm very impressed you were able to just use Wiley.

If I remember correctly, you mentioned once that someone told you it couldn't be done. Looks like you proved them wrong.

    Which is fantastic

    🙂

I could not have done it without NINJA MCQs.

@jsimus I actually used WTB and would do 20-question practice sessions from the unseen question pool with all categories selected, so that I could get questions from all topics. The one-question-per-chapter was my best idea for converting this method to the book, but with WTB, I'd just let them do the picking! Does that answer your question?

@liss Haha good memory. 🙂 Yes, boyfriend's uncle told me in a know-it-all manner that I couldn't pass these tests without going to a class. Not “without videos”, not “can't pass on your first try”, just “can't pass without a class”. So, will be nice to see him at Thanksgiving and respond to any questions with “Yes, I did pass my exams – all of them – on the first try with just books and practice questions.”
