I am in a panic! I am studying for the BEC exam but have run into a huge road block. The IT portion of BEC seems near impossible for me to understand. Any recommendations or advice on how to prepare for the IT portion of BEC would be greatly appreciated, Thank you very much!!

What Review company are you using?

If you are using Wiley and have their homework book, the best way is read the chapter and then do questions on subject. It is the best way to get the IT portion straight in your head. By reading – doing the questions in the book one at a time, reading the answer on why you got it right or wrong, moving on to the next question. Keep Practicing.

Thank you guys for your advice. Will try it, hope it will work. Yes, I do use Wiley. Just did not expect that BEC can be so harder than REG or FAR for me.

I hated BEC especially the IT stuff. I thought it was way worse than REG. I studied with Becker, but what the previous posts said…I think just go through the chapter, jot down the important parts, and then do as many questions as possible with be your best bet. Good luck

    BEC - PASS
    FAR - PASS
    Audit - PASS
    REG - PASS

I wouldn't worry about IT too much. I would consider it a weak portion for me when I took BEC and I actually did better than most when I got my score report. I would advise to just practice using wiley testbank (if you have it or plan on purchasing it), or just practice using whatever study program you are using.

Read a lot about IT before you take exam and just practice questions. Honestly, I believe IT isn't too important in determining your qualifications to being a CPA so they test givers don't really ask too much based on IT (I could be wrong and just received an exam with easy IT questions). I believe for BEC, knowing internal control, formulas, cost accounting, and more heavily tested accounting concepts are much more important. Also a lot of IT questions can be narrowed down easily between 2 answers typically. I would focus more on knowing formulas and such for questions that will have 4 multiple choice answers that will be tough to differentiate from if you have to guess. GL on BEC. If you thought REG and FAR were ok, you should be fine with BEC. I honestly think you could have anyone study BEC material and pass even without an accounting background. Good luck.

    Quest to be a CPA

    BEC-74 (7/13),
    REG- ?? (8/13)
    AUD-TBA
    FAR-TBA

IT section of BEC is the worst, its like tryna memorize a dictionary with all the tech vocab. i listened to an audio on IT daily which was easy to follow since there are no numbers. i didn't even take notes on IT cuz i found myself copying the whole book word for word. also do what jeff says and do all the mcq on IT the day before your exam

    REG-65,71,74,73,70,74,79
    BEC-60's,60's,69,71,76*,78
    FAR-67,66,65,79
    AUD-54,60's,65,83*,69,80
    *expired

    DONE

The IT portion of BEC is awful! I am a Financial Systems Consultant and thought many of the questions were confusing and mostly antiquated. The questions used old terminology, and a few of the answers in Wiley and Becker were actually wrong! But your best bet is to use the practice questions since they did reflect the types of questions on the Exam. I will say the CPA exam questions were actually much less antiquated then the practice questions.

    FAR: 67,80 - 7/20/12
    BEC: 77 - 10/5/12
    REG: 69,86 - 2/15/13
    AUD: 81 - 4/12/13 DONE!!

Agree with JustForFun. I am an IT Auditor with Computer Science background, and used becker to study BEC. I remember one of BEC MCQ was about names of programming languages, which doesn't make any sense for CPA exam.

Actual exam questions shouldn't be as difficult as practice questions.

    Currently:
    CPA - Class of 2013
    ALMI (Associate, Life Management Institute)
CISA - Passed in 2011, Certified in 2014

    In Progress:
ASA (Associate of Society of Actuaries) - EXAM P (O), EXAM FM (O), EXAM MFE (X), EXAM MLC (X), EXAM C (X)
