To me….validity, field checks and field size check are similar because they deal with characters. Can someone explain the difference between these, in case I receive a question where they are part of the answer.

Think of a validity check more like a lookup — I typed in my employee number and then the computer checks the employee database to see if it is a valid employee number.

For a field check, think of it like a date field — if you don't type it in in the right format, (1-1-2010 vs 1/1/2010) it won't let you submit until you've fixed it.

Field check (in my understanding, based on Becker) is for formatting — are there numbers where there should be numbers, letters where there should be letters, etc. Validity check is when you are checking against another table.

(Note: if you type the date in wrong as listed above and it rejects you, it would be a field check. If you type in 1/32/2010 and it rejects you, it would be a validity check because the computer checked it against possible dates and found that that date is not actually possible.)

    Hope this helps!
