    Hi guys,

I’m studying for the BEC …again. and this time it’s 2011 so there’s 3 written communication tasks? Has anyone take BEC 2011? And do you have any advice for this written parts? I hate writing and I’m ESL. But I think I can do ok for business memo.

    I’m studying with Becker.

    thank you.

kb24 is my hero. Get it out of the way and get it over with. I am on my second anniversary with the CPA exam ;(

Written communications: Cindy Simpson says to put a date and sign your name but I never do. I'm scared it will spellcheck my name and count off points for being wrong.

I try to make sure they have an intro, body and conclusion and address the topic given. I always end with “If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact me” My rule of thumb is at least seven sentences and 3 paragraphs. I have always scored “stronger” on the written communications.

The other day I had a topic that I forgot how to answer. I totally made something up but tried to sound confident that I knew what I was writing. Anyway, at the end I wrote something about having to research the topic more thoroughly and I would get back with them with a “more formal and detailed response”. We'll see if that flies.

I don't know how you feel about your grasp of the material. I usually felt pretty good about most things going into the review, but I struggled w/ BEC. I think my main problem was that I didn't like the way the material was presented in my books. It felt like this mishmash of stuff that didn't go together, and it kept getting jumbled in my mind. I used Becker (text, notes, and Passmaster questions but no video or class) and Wiley (book and test bank). I hated how Wiley was organized. Becker was better, but it had huge amounts of material designated as ancillary. Neither one did a great job on corporate governance. What helped me in this regard was to use the CSO as my review guide. It wasn't perfect, but it made more sense than either of the books. I went through it item by item, found the material in Becker and Wiley, reviewed it, did MCQ, and on to the next section. I'd used the Ninja notes on REG and liked them so I got them for BEC and included them in my review as well. I didn't need them for everything, but they're great on IT (a definite weak area for me). Also:

    1. Make sure you understand corporate governance. It's real easy to get confused by all the similar terms and the theoretical descriptions, but you need to know it.

    2. Memorize your formulas. I read a tip to study any formulas you're worried about right before going into the test center, then write them down on the scratch paper as soon as you sit down at the computer. It's a good security blanket even if you don't use them.

    3. Do lots and lots of MCQ.

    4. Make sure to allow sufficient time for the writing section. I tried to leave 1 1/4 hours but I had lots of calculations and was struggling with focus due to sleep deprivation so I ended up with just under an hour. My questions weren't that difficult, but the first two required fairly long answers. I ended up with 9 minutes to do the last one and finished with 5 seconds to spare.

    Good luck with your studies.

    FAR 4/1/11 - 89
    AUD 4/15/11 - 85
    REG 4/29/11 - 80
    BEC 5/13/11 - 85
