BEC…. Some days you are my friend, other days I despise you.

When it comes to any of the theory questions, I feel as if I am really grasping the material and get a lot of confidence…

Then EUP, Cost Accounting, WIP, FG, PV/NPV and anything else computation related starts to trip me up. I go over the question, go over the answer and work out how to solve the problem and work on my flashcards, but they totally just seem to really hinder my confidence.

I promise some days i feel so confident, some I dont, and it all depends on the sections im focusing on for the day….

    ideas? help? suggestions>?

Honestly I was sort of the opposite of you when I took BEC. I LOVED all the computations, but struggled with the theoretical stuff. With the computations, I felt like once I learned the process you could answer any number of questions. With concept / theory questions, I would always feel uncertain because of how specific they were.

That being said, the best way to understand the computations is repetition. If you keep practicing the same types of problems over and over again, they will eventually start to click. They're not a humungous part of the exam (I definitely had more concept questions on mine) but it will definitely benefit you to be comfortable with cost accounting and NPV.

Guys – any advice on how to overcome this? It's even when I study I sit down and only want to do the theory questions…

    @Journey,

As you move through the 4 sections of the exam, you'll continue to find areas where you have comfort with your success, like the BEC theory topics and you may have a tendency to gravitate toward them because of your proficiency. Like you, I was strong with IT theory, and econ going into BEC prep…Yeah, give me those Supply & Demand curves and some GDP all day, bubba!

Reality is you have to skip past those and focus your time where you need the improvement. Right now you don't like them because you're NOT good at them, so you have to change that and build the skill.

Do a few variance problems with the solution open next to you. Follow along and don't just read the question and answer, but actually work the problem. Write it all out, re-compute the math, even if it's 5 X 3 = 15, re-do it all.

    .

Use a lot of paper and ink, fill notebooks.

You will begin to build a memory of the PROCESS through the repetition and your brain will begin to steer you through the steps subconsciously after you do 10-20 of these…Suddenly you'll be coasting through variance calculations.

And remember, each topic is represented as a proportion of the exam. What do I mean? While you're not going to get 72 questions on your favorite theory topics, you're also not going to get 72 dreaded cursed variance calcs, but you have to know them, solid.

The exam will test you ability to think it through and work the problems, and yes you may occasionally see something wacky, so you have to know the basics.

Good luck, you can do it!

I would say to just keep trucking through the multiple choice questions. In my experience with each of the exams so far I've hit sections of MC's which have really number to my confidence as well. Computations on any section really suck because they just take alot more time and effort.. but thats the name of the game on this exam.

I tried looking at the mc's in a different way. If I scored a 40% or 50% on a HW i knew thats something I just have to look into and practice more. Especially with computations – there's only so many ways they can ask the same question. If you do them enough you'll eventually figure out key words in the question and ways to approach the answer become second nature.

Write down the answers whether you get them right or wrong.. thats what I've done and I think its been the difference thus far for me.

    Good Luck

so far im finding BEC terrible..just started studying this past week. wrote out flash cards with all the formulas to help me try and memorize them… the formula questions and theory questions are really tough for me..i dont have much background on any of this…getting a little discouraged. i really hope i start improving a lot and can pass this in august.

if im finding BEC this tough i can only imagine how FAR will be.

    AUD - 2/27/12 - 76
    REG - 5/31/12 - 78
    BEC - 8/31/12 - 77
    FAR - 12/6/12 - 76

Don't worry about FAR, focus only on what you are working on now. Please learn from MY mistakes. I know I've tried this before and then old habits slip up, but try to embrace BEC. You're going to have to study either way, but being positive will make the process a whole lot easier. You're 1/2 way there!!!

@dingo and angie – thank you so much for the advice and support. i really appreciate it. i know that i can do this if i stay focused and motivated… some days are better than others. One more module of rewriting notes and then its nonstop MC's until i cant do them anymore. should i get a cram>?

@ihatestudying: what is your study habits like? what type of course are u using and when u planning to take the test? you got this ! stay focused!

    @journey….

i am using exam matrix, ninja notes, and i just the other day made up about 75 flash cards of formulas so i can try and practice and memorize them.

i study after work about 3 hours a night. and try and study on weekends also. im taking 8/31….. if i pass somehow i will have 4 tries to pass FAR before losing any parts. I have already lost credit once, i dont want it to happen again.

so far with BEC, i am not only having trouble with all these formulas i dont know, but also the theory type questions on ecomomics, it, etc… that i have no background in whatsoever..im basically doing multiple choice and trying to cancel out choices, then read the descriptions whetehr i got it right or wrong. trying to teach myself all the material i guess.

@angie, ..thanks for the advice…im trying not to worry about FAR for now, but if im finding BEC this crazy , i know that will be even crazier

anyone think that maybe the NINJA Audio will help me with BEC? dont know how much it would really help. if it would help me learn these topics, i would be willing to spend the 100 bucks on it.

@ihatestudying yes they are extremely helpful. they are also great b/c u can read them anywhere and on ur mobile device, very convenient! i highly reccomend them. the audio is great too. I have found any spare minute i have I can spend either listening or reading the notes, the better off i will be! but they are awesome, the notes pinpoint those topics you def need to know and jeff does a great job laying it all out for you in an easy way to understand with great tricks also to remember things

@ihatestudying – it depends. are you in the car alot or commuting to work? if so, the audio is great.

it also depends what kind of learner you are. I like to use any opportunity i have to reinforce the material, whether if i am in a long car trip or just somewhere where I can break out my ninja notes or actual notes.

so it all depends, but it does look like jeff will refund u if u dont like it!
