Whitehall Corporation produces chemicals used in the cleaning industry. During the previous month Whitehall incurred $300,000 of joint costs in producing 60,000 units of AM-12 and 40,000 units of BM-36. Whitehall uses the units-of-production method to allocate joint costs. Currently, AM-12 is sold at split-off for $3.50 per unit. Flank Corporation has approached Whitehall to purchase all of the production of AM-12 after further processing. The further processing will cost Whitehall $90,000.
Concerning AM-12, which one of the following alternatives is most advantageous?a. Whitehall should process further and sell to Flank if the total selling price per unit after further processing is greater than $3.00, which covers the joint costs.
b. Whitehall should process further and sell to Flank if the total selling price per unit after further processing is greater than $1.50, which covers the incremental costs.
c. Whitehall should continue to sell at split-off unless Flank offers at least $4.50 per unit after further processing, which covers Whitehall's total costs.
d. Whitehall should process further and sell to Flank if the total selling price per unit after further processing is greater than $5.00.Explanation
Choice “d” is correct. Whitehall should process further and sell to flank if the total selling price per unit after further processing is greater than $5.00.
Per Unit Totals
AM-12 AM-12 BM-36 Combined
Units 1 60,000 40,000 100,000
Joint costs $3.00 $180,000 ÷ $120,000 = $300,000
Further costs 1.50 90,000
Total costs 4.50 $270,000
Add gross margin at split-off:
($3.50 – 3.00) = .50
Minimum $5.00
Choices “b”, “a”, and “c” are incorrect, based on the above calculation. Can anyone please explain to me the reason they're considering joint costs in calculating incremental costs?
Thanks!

aatouralParticipantKawtharCa – we use JC because you need to find out the total costs of producing AM, the JC allocated to AM are still part of the cost incurred in manufactring that product. I am guessing that what is throwing you off is the fact that JC are sunk costs (irrelevant). In this case you gotta look at it in the simplest way if it costs me this much to produce an item then I have to set a SP higher that that.
Hope this helps.

aatouralParticipantI just CANNOT understand these questions!
In evaluating the impact of relative inflation rates on the demand for a foreign currency, which of the following is true?
a – Inflation is irrelevant to currency demand.
b – As inflation associated with a foreign economy increases in relation to a domestic economy, demand for the foreign currency falls. CORRECT
c – As inflation associated with a foreign economy increases in relation to a domestic economy, demand for the foreign currency increases.
d – As inflation associated with a foreign economy decreases in relation to a domestic economy, demand for the foreign currency falls.BEC - PASSED

Spartans92Participant@aa, looking at the question A can be out immediately because it is relevant. Let's look at D, if Inflation decreases for the foreign economy that increases the demand not decrease. C, as inflation increase the currency is worth less why would I wanna buy more? It is nonsense..unless I have a ton of spare money I dont care. So that is wrong. B the only possible answer left…If inflation goes up in a foreign country (Germany for instance) I would want less of their currency once again because think about WWII their currency was in loads where people used as toilet paper… I dont wanna buy it. Therefore, the demand falls.

msmhussainParticipantHi Guys, need some advice/motivation. I took BEC twice and I used Becker both times. Initially I got 57 and 60 last time. I feel so confused especially with variance analysis/budgeting. I was scoring ~65 in B-3 which is Variance analysis but everything else I was scoring around 75-80 in the practice tests. When I took the test it seem tough and just don't know if Becker is sufficient or should I switch to Roger/Yaeger for conceptual understanding especially for my weak areas. Feel so frustrated and disappointed with the score especially after putting in so many freaking hours of study.
