@Spartans92 – I agree, feel like you just gotta do all the practice MCQ and hope you get lucky on the exam with the questions you're tested on.

I know right! I was told that BEC is a conceptual exam like AUD more than math based. I just need to get done with Becker so I can move on to Ninja. When are you testing norse? Good Luck!

@ Spartans92 – Yea i've been frustrated with some of the conceptual questions as there are multiple correct answers to choose from in some cases. I am taking it tomorrow, solely using Becker. I took AUD in February and scored a 88.

I'm fine with the math based questions as long as there aren't too many eating up all my time!

June 10. I am still working on Ch 2 didnt really have time to study for the past few days since I was preparing for my exams for my classes.
    I got a question.
Whitehall Corporation produces chemicals used in the cleaning industry. During the previous month Whitehall incurred $300,000 of joint costs in producing 60,000 units of AM-12 and 40,000 units of BM-36. Whitehall uses the units-of-production method to allocate joint costs. Currently, AM-12 is sold at split-off for $3.50 per unit. Flank Corporation has approached Whitehall to purchase all of the production of AM-12 after further processing. The further processing will cost Whitehall $90,000.
    a.
Whitehall should process further and sell to Flank if the total selling price per unit after further processing is greater than $5.00.
    b.
Whitehall should continue to sell at split-off unless Flank offers at least $4.50 per unit after further processing, which covers Whitehall's total costs.
    c.
Whitehall should process further and sell to Flank if the total selling price per unit after further processing is greater than $3.00, which covers the joint costs.
    d.
Whitehall should process further and sell to Flank if the total selling price per unit after further processing is greater than $1.50, which covers the incremental costs.

So I got the right answer but I am not understanding Becker's explanation (as usual). I got $5.00 because the additional cost (90,000/60,000 units =1.5 per) 1.5 + 3.5 (current cost) = 5.
I am not sure if this is the proper way to approach the problem and would like others to explain in a different way.

Yea, as indicated in the question the joint cost would be allocated based on volume, accordingly 0.6*300,000=180,000 would joint cost will be allocated to the product + 90,000 additional processing costs = 270,000 to be divided by the number of units 270,000/60,000 = 4.5 allocated cost per unit. looking back before the further processing we notice that he had a margin of profit of 0.5 (0.6*300,000 = 180,000/60,000 = 3 compared to selling price of 3.5). Based on this analysis we would conclude that he should at least charge 5$ to cover the initial profit margin(4.5+0.5=5)! hope this helps.

This is a question about opportunity cost.

Option A : You can sell AM-12 now for $3.50.
Option B : With another $1.50 you can make it AM-12 PLUS.

As a manager, How much you need to charge for you to choose Option B?

    3.5 +1.5 = $5 🙂

The joint cost doesn't affect your decision. They are historical cost.

@marqzho, thats right, I just explained it differently using the incremental revenues and costs concept. May be closer to our understanding …

I have a question that keeps throwing me off when I do the NPV problems. When they tell you ta company purchased an equipment and it has certain amount of salvage value at the end of its life. For depreciation purposes, do I subtract that salvage from the total cost of the machine in order to calculate annual depreciation or not? and why?

Thanks guys! Yea, I think dumbing things down works better for me lol. I think it is much easier putting it in opportunity cost perspective. I initially just thought theres an additional cost on top of what we paid so the total..knowing joint cost is irrelevant.
