    Guys can you help?

I am reviewing and getting stumped again with OH variances. I am using some of the questions and taking them further and figuring out the Spending, Efficiency, and Volume variances even if the question does not ask for that answer. Because of that I do not have an answer to compare it to, to see if I am correct.

A company uses a standard costing system. At the end of the current year, the company provides the following OH info:

    Actual OH incurred:

    Variable $90,000

    Fixed $62,000

    Budgeted fixed OH $65,000

Variable OH rate (per direct labor hr) $8

Standard hours allowed for actual production 12,000

    Actual labor hours used 11,000

What is the variable OH variance?

    8,000 unfavorable.

Okay that is correct but now when I try to figure out the efficiency variance I do not know what to use in the calculation.

Do I not have enough information?

I tried to solve it this way. Please let me know if this answer is correct.

    Variable Efficiency variance= (Std LH*Rate)-(Act LH*Rate)

    =(12000*8)-(11000*8)

    =96000-88000= 8,000F

    Variable Spending Variance=Actual cost-(act LH*Rate)

    =90,000-(11,000*8)

    =2,000U

I took this yesterday. I have no idea. I studied a lot. I felt prepared going in.

    If I get a 68, wouldn't be surprised.

If I get an 85, wouldn't be surprised.

My test went Normal – Hard (took me 45 minutes for this testlet alone) – Super, super easy (25 minutes for 24 questions)

I know there isn't an EASY testlet, but it really was. I'm hopeful that it was so easy because it was actually medium, but I was really prepared.

The good news is, I got three memos that I could answer and I have my under grad degree in English.

Overall, I feel like I passed, but who knows.

    12,000 x 8 vs 11,000 x 8 should give you the unfavorable variance

    @UCMCPA

I did not ask my question they way I wanted to. The book question is asking for the variable efficiency variance and I get the answer of $8000 unfavorable. What if they asked for the volume variance? How do I calculate the applied amount?
