@Qlad, for WC's another thing that you can do beside reading them is actually type couple of them in your own words. That will help you practice a little more. As English is not my first language, I hate WCs and being BEC my 3rd time (74,65) I have learnt this the hard way

    REG 81
    BEC 74,65,78
    FAR 79
    AUD 85 DONE!!!

Taking BEC January 3. I am having the most trouble with Net Present Value and IRR. I just can't understand which rates to use etc. I am averaging 60% on the multiple choice in Becker. I really dont' want to move forward to the other chapters until I have this finance stuff down. Any advice? I am so frustrated.

What do you mean, which rates to use?

They go hand-in-hand. Whenever NPV is 0, whatever rate that is = IRR.

I guess I am just confused with the entire concept. But when calculating NPV, the Becker questions usually gives you 2 different sets of rates, Present value of an annuity of 1 at x% and Present value of 1 due in x years. I get confused on which rates to use to calculate the NPV.

Can you help me understand this problem: Pole Co is investing in a machine with a 3 year life. This machine is expected to reduce annual cash operating costs by $30,000 in each of the first 2 years and by $20,000 in year 3. Present values of an annuity of $1 at 14% are: Period 1 0.88 Period 2 1.65 and Period 3 2.32. Using a 14% cost of capital, what is the present value of these future savings?

    a. 69,500

    b.59,600

    c.62,900

    d.60,800

KNMCPA, To find Present Value, first you find all the future cash flows i.e. principal plus all the interest amounts( interest rate is used only for this purpose i.e. to find interest amount) and then u always use cost of capital rate to find Present value for those cash flows.
