Materials Price Variance = Difference (of standard-actual prices) times Actual Usage
The actual pounds of material is given at 17,500 for a total cost of $70,000. Divide the $70k over 17.5k and you get $4 per pound. This will be your actual usage per pound.
The standard price per pound isn't give so we must somehow find it. Material usage variance is given for some reason so we can try using that. The formula for it is:
Material Usage Variance = Difference (of standard-actual usage) times the Standard Price
Plug in the numbers that we have and we get:
-$2500 = (17,000 – 17,500) x S
Use algebra to find S (which is the standard usage) and we get $5 per pound. Plug that in the material price variance formula and we get:
Material Price Varaince = ($5 – $4) x 17,500
Material Price Varaince = $17,500 favorable
