BEC is the worst exam I had to study for in my LIFE.

I liked intermediate accounting, didnt mind tax, law, and all the other classes.. But someone who knew me very well decided to slap every subject I ever hated into one exam and called it BEC.

I don’t think I can do this for my exam on the 31st of this month. I think I might have to push it back. I study maybe 5-7 hours a day. But the way its going, I get almost every question wrong and have to learn it that way.

What should I do? Push my exam back, and move AUD until end of Nov? I honestly am so discouraged. Id rather study the other 3 topics then this crap.

Any advice is always appreciated. I just feel so discouraged…

REG: PASS || BEC: PASS || AUD: PASS || F: SCORE PENDING..

BEC isn't THAT bad. I studied for BEC in 5 days and took it. If you actually think about the material, by and large [excluding IT and maybe COSO], it is far more intuitive than regular accounting. I feel like you're psyching yourself out, especially with your last thread.

@Entourage – I am using Becker.. I am feel so overwhelemed…. REG was easy compared to this. I was thinking of extending my test date for an extra 3ish weeks to maybe go back and read the book as well. Right now all I do is watch the lecture go straight into the HW, but I get a lot wrong, and learn that way. Just very stressful.

    @boztigha – I disagree!!!!!!!!

@cardinalhoya – HOW?! I took cost over a year ago, and I remember the concepts just not so much the formulas. It just seems like I am walking into a cost accounting exam with BEC for the time being. I guess thats not true, I should just keep pushing through.

REG: PASS || BEC: PASS || AUD: PASS || F: SCORE PENDING..

you cant just skip reading the book and learning the concepts and go straight into the homework. maybe after the lectures you go read the book and learn the concepts and then do the hw, you will do a lot better. this is my last part and i thought reg was the easiest, maybe you got away in that without reading the book but it wont work on here. i didnt take cost accounting in college, so this is really hard for me but i keep going over the material and doing the problems and it gets a lot easier. i dont think you can pass the cpa exam without reading the book….

I took Cost Accounting over a year ago as well and most of the courses which BEC covers over 2 years ago. I agree with CPA510. I think your study method is very flawed. Jumping into the homework before you understand the material is far from helpful, or at least, much less helpful than actually having a a decent to good understanding going into the homework. The homework problems and any questions you get incorrect should be for refining your understanding of the material and getting down all of the random points, not for learning the core of the topic. The explanations of the answers in the homework are not very in depth and are written in the context of you having at least a decent understanding of the topic as a whole. The way you're studying, it's very likely that once you do start getting some questions right the second time / third time around, it may just be because you have memorized the answer as opposed to actually understanding the material.

My method for studying was listening to the lecture (in a live Becker Fast Pass class), rereading/flash carding my notes, studying my flash cards, and then doing the homework while taking notes on questions that I got wrong. I never fully reread the book for calculation-intensive topics. I only skimmed back through the book for COSO and IT.

cardinalhoya – I am completely with you on BEC. I couldn't get interested in the information. I thought it was really hard. BEC is the devil. FAR sucks, but the nice thing about FAR is if you study and give it your all, you will feel prepared when you go into the exam. I feel like BEC can be such a wild card and so many obscure topics. To each his/her own though….

    REG - 80 (Becker only)
    BEC - 76 (Becker only)
    AUD - 71, 76 (Becker only)
FAR - 65, 74, 81! (Becker, Wiley Test Bank, Ninja notes & Audio)

    CPA Class of 2012 🙂

Hey future, how did you feel like you did on REG? Did you feel like there were alot of BLAW MCQ's? I'm taking it on monday. Also, I am taking AUD on the same day as you. (just to let you know)

Good luck and keep going hard with BEC.

I feel ya. For most of us, the topics in BEC are things we only saw in one class in college freshman and sophomore year. I think the more you immerse yourself in the topics, the more it'll come back to you. Good luck!

I think each of us has a strength and weakness. I really like the cost accounting concepts. I wish they comprised my whole BEC exam but I bet I'll get very few cost questions. On the other hand, I hate memorization which was a big concern for AUD. I would read your review material and if it still feels over whelming consider buying a second had cost or managerial accounting textbook and reading whole chapters on the topic. So maybe you invest an hour in reading a CVP chapter or budget chapter. If you know it is a weakness it is worth the time. The review material in those areas I believe is only a review, not enough information to learn the concept start to finish.

    Good luck.

    BEC 84
    FAR 80
    AUD 85
    REG 78

I am finding BEC to be very challenging too. I foolishly thought that because the book was thinner, that meant the information was “not a big deal”… HAHAHA. ah.

I have gotten through B1 & B2 lectures with extensive note taking, but I still have over 250 homework problems. I know I'll get better with practice, and nothing is insurmountable, but it's just a little bit discouraging to be looking (what feels like) 250 two paragraph multi calculation problems in the face. I know they aren't all that drawn out, but these problems take FOREVER to work.

I don't want to jinx myself by saying that I miss REG, but… you guys… I like taxes. Sigh.

Okay, whining over, back to MCQs

    REG- 53, 91
    BEC- 88
    FAR- 62, 85
    AUD- 85

    Ethics- 93

@cardinalhoya, what were you doing to study for BEC in so little time? I feel like a lot of the concepts are still relatively fresh in my head (just graduated, had a minor in economics, advanced managerial accounting class w/in last quarter). I might try to take it down at the end of summer before my Master's (after FAR of course).

I took Becker's Fast Pass class which was 1 or 2 chapters per class with a day in between each class. On the days in between classes, I would do every problem for the chapters we had covered in the previous class, and since all of the topics were intuitive and mostly familiar to me, I didn't really need much review after going through the 6 chapters.

Cost accounting is the devil. Econ/finance/IT are fine, but cost accounting makes me feel like becoming violent and I am typically a pretty laid back person. I'm looking forward to this being over.

    FAR(11/14/11)- 92
    AUD(01/04/12)- 91
    REG(05/30/12)- 93
    BEC(07/21/12)- 88
