BEC Feeling discouraged, need a shot in the arm and a new plan

    Hi gang,

I am feeling a bit discouraged about BEC. It is my last section and I have it scheduled for 11/15. I don’t know what is wrong with me, but the material is just not clicking for me. Ironically my strongest section so far is the cost accounting, but financial management is giving me lots of grief.

Let me tell you what i have done so far. I have done all of the lectures (Yaeger) and taken notes. I am supplementing with Ninja notes and am rewriting them section by section before i do the book assigned homework problems. I am not too jazzed about my progress at this point and am running out of daylight before exam day. Rescheduling isn’t really an option because i have a family vacation planned the morning after exam day and my wife has threatened to beat me up if I study over another trip.

Here is where i need your help, what do you guys recommend in the roughly 3 weeks i have until my test? Do I read the book and abandon MCQ, do I just plow through the Book MCQ regardless of scores, or do i go exclusively to the test bank. Any and all recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I definitely wouldn't “abandon the MCQ”. Those let you know how you're doing and where your weak areas are. Keep rewriting the ones you get wrong so you can reinforce understanding, but go back to the lectures/reading for stuff that's really not clicking. Then hit the MCQ again. You can do this!

I've got my exam around the same time, my last one too. We can't stop now! It ain't over til it's over. Course, I've only just started my study plan for BEC… 3 weeks, whoo!

    REG - 85
    AUD - 99
    FAR - 89 - w/ NINJA Audio and Blitz
    BEC - 91

Using Wiley - books and test bank - 6 months - all 4 first time

I would abandon the book and stick to WTB and ninja. I also find it helpful to rewrite WTB hints and fact nuggets in the answer explanations. Reading the book cover to cover is a waste of time for my learning style. I skim through the topics, do book homework, and use it as a reference if I'm stuck on a concept.

    Variable56,

I am with you on being discouraged with BEC. I thought for sure this one would be easy for me, but it's been totally opposite!

I think the advise about continuing with the MQC is the way to go. It's amazing what you can recall on test day and doing these over and over until you are just sick about it, is a great way to cement this in your brain.

I am just preying that the actual exam is easier than Wiley. I'm in big trouble if it's not:-)

We are all here for you and we have your back!

By the way, is this your first exam? If it is, it's totally normal to feel the way you are feeling. I felt this way with AUD and passed. Never thought I would pass that beast.

This is what I do and it works for me – but i will say it may not work for all. And yes, I am taking BEC Nov,9 so i have just over 2 weeks to go.

Each day or night I attempt to do 25 MCQs (using the test bank) for each unit in Wiley. I have time before work (1 unit), lunch (1 unit) I may stay at work (for some more) and then finish the rest when i get home. If i have issues with a question or topic I read the book.

I always come back to thought of ‘what if I fail' to motivate me. It is choice between a bonus and possible pay raise or having to pay for BEC again. lose REG, pay for that, and to study and take two exams during tax season. I'd rather grind it out (possible upset the wife) for two weeks or be miserable for the next 4 months (and really make the missus mad).

    Reg 82; FAR 75; AUD 91; BEC 11/9/13; result due - 11/22/13

Thanks everyone, this is good advice i think i will just try to learn from WTB and the MCQ's and use the book as more of a reference point.

@CPAsweetness, this is thankfully and hopefully my very last section. I seem to have a similar meltdown mid study schedule with each section but i normally have the time to shake it off and finish strong. I don't think i have ever been in this position where the material is not familiar at the 3 weeks to test stage. I know it is possible though from what i have read on the forums. Good luck with your test, i want to know how you do.

@KiwiCPA I am in the same situation where i am walking a fine line with my wife and how much she is willing to endure with 4 young kids at home. I think i will just start doing MCQ's until I become numb :). You have inspired me to be doing way more than i am.

Good luck to everyone on their exams.

I felt the same way for BEC. That is when I decided to ditch everything I was using. Instead, I only used the NINJA notes and did every single MCQ in Gleim in random order 200 MCQ a day no matter what. I averaged 60% on all of the Gleim BEC MCQ. Got an 80 on the actual exam.

A few days before the exam I tried some becker progress tests and I was doing so much better on them. I also memorized the WC format I found in the forums.
