    Time to vent….

If I have one piece of advice for anyone prepping for BEC, its DO NOT WASTE YOU MONEY ON BECKER!!! Now, I received the Becker review for free from my employer. So, I am trying to make the best of it. For FAR and REG, I felt they did an “OK” job. I have been through the lectures and most of the MCQs for BEC; and feel I am about 65% ready. I purchased the 2010 CRAM from Yaeger last weekend that I am counting on to pick up where, I feel, Becker has dropped the ball. (No, I’m not a spokes person for Yaeger.)

Why is it that I can not stand the Becker Review for BEC? I felt like the material out of the book as well as the lectures, did not cover the material in the questions adequately enough. But that’s not the entire issue. When you get the questions incorrect, the explanations either stink so badly, or they do not make any sense/do not follow the procedure out of the book. (i.e. In the book, Becker states to apply a certain formula to solve the particular problem; however, in the actual so-called “PassMaster Software,” they apply some other method. So, you do not even get to see the actual theory in the textbook applied.) This tells me that Becker does not update their software/lecture materials adequately enough to match the theory mentioned in their books. (Not to mention that when you are listening to the lectures, you can totally tell where Becker through in a ½ second voice-clip to try and ‘update' a particular section.)

Becker must be doing something right, as they are a HUGE organization and many individuals have passed the CPA exam with their help. I’m a visual learner; meaning, I HAVE to see the theory applied before it makes sense. I need to see the information in the textbook applied to actual questions. Becker has a little bit of this, but not nearly enough for me to gain comfort.

    Anyway…enough of this…back to studying….

    CPAequalsHBP,

I'm in the middle of studying too with Becker. I have not taken BEC at all yet so I can't make any comment as to how well Becker actually prepares you for it. There are a few questions where the material isn't spelled out for you in Becker but for the most part it is there. I've notice there are terms that they use interchangeably. For example, they use one term in the questions but a different term in the text when the term is really the same thing. Another thing you seem to be having issues with is that they don't apply the formulas the same or use a different formula completely. They are maniplutating the same formulas from the book. They are not different formulas. I had to play with them a lot to see what was going on and had the same reaction you had in the beginning. If you have issues with the questions (and believe me, I know how frustrating that is), post your questions. There are lots of people here to help you.

I agree Becker isn't what it normally is with BEC, but that's partly because BEC has very new topics and Becker took finance questions from the CMA exam (much harder in terms of that topic), and econ was kind of randomly thrown in there, IT is just a mess, they do business structures well and are decent with cost accounting.

*shrug* let's just all hope we did well.

So if we took BEC on Feb. 6th, we should be in wave 1?

    AUD 87 - REG 93 - FAR - 94 - BEC 2/6/10

@ Joran, Note: “The following are predictions based on historical trends.” That means that they are predictions, and are based on historical trends. This isn't psych 100 office hours, its another 71 the CPA exam blog.

Just posting to whine and let everyone know that I am currently in Becker CH 3 and am about to start the lecture on Strategies for Short-Term and Long-Term Financing.

I am SO TIRED of studying it's hard to keep focus. Hopefully I'll have some great news on my AUD score in a couple of weeks and can crank this thing out on the 22nd! If I can have AUD under my belt, I'll finally feel like I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Keep focused, and good luck everyone!

Thanks Jeff – no worries there, I have too much time invested to give up now. I WILL have these exams completed by the end of Q2. I am leaving that buffer in case I don't pass AUD or BEC – that leaves my summer free!!!!!!

@Aloe- I'm not asking about something off-topic like the proper ingredients for a casserole or the recommended tire pressure for my car, I asked about score releases. I'm quite aware of what this forum is (BEC Score Releases).

Joran – you should be getting your BEC score within the next 8-10 days, depending on your state. I would say that 2-6 is a safe bet for Wave 1.

    Good luck to you,

    -Jeff

I recently took parts BEC & AUD, when I left BEC, I was blown away, several of the questions were not in my book. I studied extremely hard, I don't feel like Gleim covered the material, once I saw the test. I felt good walking in, but felt like leaving after the first testlet. I am pretty sure I failed. I used Gleim books.

What would you all suggest as using for study material. I really don't have the money for the $2,000 job from Becker.

Looking for something low budget, but will do the job. I can't attend courses I have to just read the books.

    I'd appreciate any info.

I am using Gleim and I am confident I passed BEC when I sat for it in Jan. I also passed FAR and REG last year with Gleim. There are always some problems in the exam that will blow you away. Maybe, you got a difficult test. I know some people who failed BEC and when they re-took it, the exam was much easier. I didn't think I passed FAR, but I did so you really have to wait for your score. Quite a few people in my firm used Gleim to pass the CPA exam so I'd stick with it. Just remember the passing rate is about 50% so statistically, you will fail one or two parts the 1st time around. Good luck
