Hey,

I am almost done with the CVP section of B2 in Becker. They say that the test is mostly conceptual. But the homework is math/problem intensive and worst part is that the ways to solve them are not at all covered in the material. You have to just know it without covering it or you just do not know. I have taken and passed first time the other three CPA sections and never came across this. I have absolutely no idea how to solve many of these questions. Any suggestions/advice? I heard the actual exam is not nearly as tough as these kinds of problems. I hope that is the case.

Can't speak for everybody but from what I've read and experienced you are correct, there aren't as many computational questions compared to conceptual on the BEC exam.

The Becker homework for chapter 2 is very math intensive. It's great because if you can complete all the questions (I recall there were plenty homework problems for that chapter) you will be super prepared for the worst kind of computational question the exam throws at you.

Becker does assume the candidate has a fundamentally sound background with how to solve basic algebraic equations though. If you've been out of school for a while I can see that tripping somebody up.

@dnob … Thank you for your response. I am comfortable with algebra, especially this kind. My complaint is that the formulas given to students to solve the questions, do not apply at all in many of these questions. In other words, we are being asked to solve questions with absolutely no instruction on how to solve them. I cannot wrap my head around that. How can we be expected to answer questions with no teaching or training on how to do that? Also, if we are paying a lot of money to take review courses then shouldn't this kind of instruction be included if we may need to know this information for the real exam?

I just took BEC and unlike others, I had a lot computations (luckily). But as compared to Becker, these were simpler. You won't see a 3 paragraph question on the exam, that is just insane. Maybe a few that are 1 paragraph. It is the luck of the draw on what type of questions you get since it is randomly based. What helps in BEC mostly is knowing the concepts. It is more important to know that then it is to do the MCQ over and over again.

I'd say about 20-25% of the questions were computations. I must say, Ninja MCQs for BEC were a torture. So many horrifically long, complicated computations. Much longer than the ones in CPAExcel. Weirdly enough, it was the opposite for FAR. Ninja MCQs were shorter and simpler than CPAExcel's.

Switching this go-round, I actually like the way Becker explains the computations, they have them all laid out all nicely for you. Like @circadian malfunction is saying, Gleim and Ninja slaps everything into 10 page essay on their answer explanations.
